Chance Meeting: A Poem

Scott Bauer
She recognized the horror

His faded hell from her past

The stricken fear

That filled his eyes

As they focused on her form again

He turned to flee

She reacted with her hand

Darting out to his heavy shoulder

He faltered in her grasp

And was felled by her again

She had let him go once

Before he could give no more

So he thought he was free

Escaped her

But now the laughing fox

Is caught again by the same trap

This is why she existed

She fed off it

Off of him, and others

It strengthened her power

To feed off of still more

Just for that instant

Was all it lasted

A coincidental meeting

On a busy street

Thousands of miles and a lifetime away

From before

But eternity is often smaller

Than one can understand

And once a strong and confident man

Collapsed in upon his fear

And it was this fear

On which she fed

She moved past him

Her arm draining him

Then she was just another

On the boulevard

But he clutched his briefcase

And babbled with anxiety

Until all reason left him

With his last sane thought

He cursed her
