Be Careful What You Ask For

J P Whickson

He went to the cupboard and took out the last can of tomato soup, nothing was left but a sprinkle of label the mice had not consumed. He didn't bother to heat the soup but dipped his spoon directly into the thick concentrate and ate it slowly, savoring each bite, tired; tired of the poverty, bad breaks, and all consuming hopelessness he endured for so long.

The soup filled him tonight, but what about tomorrow? Dressed in layers of old sweatshirts given to him by worried neighbors, he sat staring out the window.

"I can't take this any longer. I demand change. I demand that you change my life." As he spoke he shook his clenched fist in the air and his voice increased in intensity from a small painful cry deep inside to the fury now escaping. " Whatever power there is in the universe, I demand you change my life now. I accept this way of living no longer." The intensity of the moment pulled any remaining energy from his body.

He walked to the stained couch and pulled the layers of covers over his body in an effort to stay warm. "No more, I accept this no more." He mumbled as he dozed off to sleep.

"It is reported that the neighbors found the body at 3:00 p.m. The coroner does not feel there was foul play." The newscaster announced in a somber voice.

Excellent and powerful piece of writing. I trust this man is now in a peaceful place, no longer in the perilous plight of poverty of body and spirit.

The headlines to this piece remind me of the election. I am so disappointed in the outcome for President.
