Change Hair Colors Using Paint Shop Pro

JustMeof3
You don't have to go to a store and buy a box of hair color to change your look. With Paint Shop Pro, you can experiment with different colors, or even make a fantasy image. The end result appears natural enough to actually look like your real hair color.

Open Paint Shop Pro, then open any image (that you own, have permission to use, or is in the public domain) that you would like change the hair color on. It's a good idea to use a photo with long and loose hair, at least while you are getting familiar with the steps involved.

Click on Layers, and then click on Duplicate. Make sure that the top layer, Copy of Background, is active.

Click on Adjust, go to Hue and Saturation, and then click on Colorize. Adjust the settings as you like, for example, if you want to make the hair dark blond you might choose a hue of about 35 and a saturation of about 100. For bright red you could use a hue of about 15 and a saturation of about 200. Or go wild with a deep purple using a hue of about 185 and a saturation around 150, or try a neon green using a hue of around 85 and a saturation of about 250.

When you are satisfied with the result, click OK.

Now click on the Eraser Tool and adjust the size to the actual size of your image. Make sure the Density and Opacity are set to 100%. On the copy of the background layer, begin erasing everything but the hair to expose the normal coloring of the image. Zoom in on your image and adjust the size of the eraser as necessary for finer details, especially close to the face.

When you have erased the coloring on the rest of the image, click on Layers and go to Merge, then click on Merge All. Save the altered image with a different name than your original, and you're finished. This technique does require some time and attention to detail for the erasure, but the effect is worth it. These steps are adaptable in Paint Shop Pro versions 7 and up. Picture yourself with different hair colors before you take the plunge in real life. Or see what you look like with a punk or fantasy style without actually doing anything to your hair. Feel free to experiment, the possibilities are endless!
