Change Your Thinking and Become More Self Sufficient

Shelby Evans
If you have been accustomed to relying on others to meet most of your daily needs, you will need a thorough housecleaning of how you think if you want to become more self sufficient. The more you can rely on yourself, the more independent you will be. In our modern world, however, most of us have become reliant on others to meet most of our own daily needs. We have become so accustomed to this dependent lifestyle that we think there is no other way, but if we open our minds and change our thinking we can find many ways of becoming independent and more self reliant.

In earlier days, many people lived on small farms and independently grew and supplied much of their own food. Though it would be extremely difficult to have that degree of self sufficiency these days, most people can become much more self sufficient than they currently are. If you have any kind of a yard, balcony, or patio, you can grow a lot of your own vegetables. Some cities even have communal areas that people can use to grow vegetable gardens. If you have a larger area, you can also grow berry bushes, fruit trees and nuts.

Many modern cleaning products that we regularly and habitually purchase at the store can be replaced by making our own cleaning products from less expensive ingredients. There are books and articles easily available that will provide all the necessary information to do this. This will, of course, require a little extra work and time, but it is one more step in becoming independent that can be very gratifying, as well as a money saver. Doing this can also be much more friendly to the environment, depending on what sort of ingredients you use to make your cleaning products. Be sure to properly follow directions so that you do not create any hazardous mixtures.

Everyone has become so accustomed to heating and lighting our homes or fueling our automobiles in the traditional way that we have closed our minds to other possibilities. Making changes in this area will require a greater commitment to research and most likely, some initial expense; however, there are numerous advanced energy technologies available for becoming independent. Innovative thinkers are using their knowledge and new scientific discoveries to create new alternatives everyday. Because it is such a major change, it is, of course, important to do your research thoroughly and become totally committed to making the necessary changes before embarking on any alternative energy method.

If your health and vitality is up to it, you can go a lot of places with your own pedal power or even just walking instead of driving your car everywhere. If you change your thinking to adapt to this self sufficient lifestyle you will also find many health benefits derived from the exercise, the meditative states you can indulge in, and spending more time outdoors.

We have even become reliant on others to provide us with most of our entertainment and recreation activities these days. Just change your thinking, and you will find lots of really enjoyable games and activities to do right in your own home with your family, your friends, and in your neighborhood. So do not be sad or resentful, instead get to know the ones you love, and spend some wonderful moments together in enjoyable activities right at home or in your community.

Most of us have accumulated far more stuff than we really need or use, so consider lightening the load, and sell some of those things or donate them to someone who could really use them. Getting rid of some of this stuff may be an important key to unlocking your mind so that you can change your thinking to consider other possible ways of doing things.

So change your thinking, and you may find dozens of ways to becoming independent and more self sufficient which will reduce your expenses, provide health benefits, and increase your independence.

I'm always surprised at how self sufficient I can be when I change my thinking.
