Change: In Word Only

Seth Waite
Politicians have promised hope and change from both parties. I find those words to be misleading. Think of what it means to the Democrats... and now the Republicans... Seriously, what is it that they want to change? I am going to tell you just a few things I think they mean by those words.

REPUBLICANS

Change will come in only a few forms. First, it means that they will not be President Bush in words or style. Second, they will work on changing Roe v. Wade, the constitutional definition of marriage, and the situation in Iraq (to a clearly defined victory). What will not change: the size of the government, No Child Left Behind, welfare, health-care, and government spending (I am talking about reality here, not platform). They will talk about cutting programs, spending less, and moving back to our idealistic societies of the past.

DEMOCRATS

Change will come in minor forms, but differently than imagined. First, they will be different in speech and style from George W., but not much will actually change in actions. Second, they will work on changing morality in order to progress (why do they think we have to abandon our morals to move forward?), and muffled but failed attempts at health-care reform. What will not change: welfare, health-care, government spending, and accountability. The government will be enlarged with many failed attempts at accomplishing anything significant.

Conclusion - Nothing much will really change. Morals will decline, initiative will be retarded, and America may lose more sovereignty. The Democrats and the Republicans will continue to bicker and complain until 2012. At that point ideologies will return and politics will be swept under the rug until after the election. The Democrats will continue to blame Bush for all of their problems and the Republicans will take no responsibility for any current problems in relation to the past. Both will be equally irresponsible, both will need reform. 2012 will be another year of "change" and "hope".
