Changing Air Purifier Filters: Not Rocket Science

Rose Richmond
Changing the Air Purifier filter may seem like a daunting task but it doesn't have to be. There are only two kinds of Air Purifier Filters. Those that you can clean yourself and put back into the purifier and those that have to be replaced. Even though most purifiers are standardized, there is not an exact, standard method for getting to the filter. Rule one of doing anything with something mechanical like this is to located the manual. If the manual is as thorough as it should be, there will be step by by step instructions on removing and replacing the filter.

However, should you not be able to locate your manual, a little inspection work may be necessary to get the job done.

For the most part the basics of air purifiers are the same. Of 8 different models I researched, they all had the same basic form of filter removal.

First, unplug the purifier. Not an electrical job, but always better safe than sorry.

Look on the back near the bottom of the purifier. The filter is usually housed in a unit that twists and pulls out or has a small screw holding it in, then pulls out.

Next remove the filter. It if is one of the reusable types, wash it in the sink with warm soap and water. Rinse well. Lay in the dish drainer or on a paper towel to dry.

Reinstall in reverse.

If you have an air purifier with a disposable type filter then you will obviously have to replace it. After you remove it from the purifier, put it in a baggie or other plastic bag and take it to your local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowes and get your replacement filter. These range in price from $10 to $50 depending again on the type of purifier you have.

It is also possible to find store brand filters to replace most brands of purifiers. Check with your local store to see if they have a less expensive replacement filter.

Again, just reinstall your filter in reverse. Plug the unit back in and you are ready to go. Keeping this filter clean and fresh will assure your air will cleaner and fresher. Leaving it dirty because you are scared to attempt the change is only wrong.

Everyone has some mechanical ability. This is a great place to check yours out. Happy cleaning.
