Public transportation is being utilized by some that have decided to get rid of their vehicles completely to save money. Areas where public transportation is not readily available and a cab cost more than the amount of money for gasoline that would have been spent make alternatives more difficult to find. Those that are a few miles outside of town find that walking to the store is not an option so gasoline has to be purchased regardless of the cost. There is less of a tendency to go sight seeing and more of a tendency to find the most direct route that provides the least amount of stopping and starting to save gasoline. The cost of gasoline is touching more than just transportation.
Gasoline prices are effecting the utility bills and the prices of items in stores. The price paid for the fuel used to make the electricity used in homes and businesses has gone up, and the cost is being passed onto consumers. Utility customers are seeing the fuel adjustment charge on the utility bill at nearly three times as much as it was this time last year. The higher bills for utilities are causing some to begin to conserve even if they've never made the attempt before. The summer's heat fast approaching is making the efforts seem drastic in preparation for it.
Air conditioners or heaters (depending on the temperature) are being left off in favor of fans or layers of blankets to lower the bill. Sandwiches are quick and easy with no energy used to make. Dishwashers, clothes dryers and in some cases washing machines are being abandoned in the efforts to lower the expenses. All of these appliances use electricity and in some cases water which adds to the utility bills. What is replacing these appliances and where are they going?
Outdoor/indoor clothes lines are used to dry clothing to avoid electric dryers. Dishes are being washed in the sink. The dishes are then towel dried or placed in a dish strainer to air dry depending on how many of them there were. Clothing is even being washed by hand to save on energy and water. The process may take more time but it's worth it to those that have chosen to undertake it.
The reason that this expense is being reduced by what may be considered drastic attempts is to make room for basic needs. The cost of food and other items are being affected by increasing gasoline cost; it takes gasoline and other fuels to get them to your local store even when it's supplied locally. Food has to be purchased and is often the first thing purchased when payday arrives. How are people saving money on their grocery bill?
People are purchasing only the items that they actually need instead of what they want. An increasing number of people are also learning how to make items from scratch. Little things like paying a few cents less for an item are actually being looked at. In a time when filling the car with gas could cost as much as the weekly grocery budget every dime counts. Now people are no longer looking at the unit price but at the final price to determine if the item fits into the budget at that moment. It is nice to see that milk is only $4 instead of $5 a gallon, although the $4 gas is something that most would rather not see.
Grocery shopping is being done at discount stores as well as the grocery store in an attempt to save more on food. There are people walking around with worn clothing simply because they don't have the money to buy clothing that is not worn because of all the price increases. So what are they doing to prevent walking around with holes in their clothing? They're going through the closet and designating clothes for home and public.
The rising costs are getting to be unbearable. Incomes are not rising even in homes that have gone from unemployment to work after spending two years or more out of work. The same reductions and changes of habit that were employed during the time of unemployment are still being used. Now there are some areas that are being taken to extremes in order to survive the rising prices.
