Chantix: An Unhealthy Choice in Smoking Cessation Products?

Pat Anthony
Chantix is a popular prescription medication used by smokers in an effort to quit the habit. Some users have reported serious side effects with this product, and the FDA began requiring a boxed warning for Chantix in 2009.

Chantix has been linked to side effects such as suicidal thoughts, paranoia, confusion, agitation, sleep disturbances and hostility. In some cases side effects began immediately. For others taking Chantix the side effects did not develop for several weeks.

The manufacturer of Chantix is Pfizer. Chantix contains varenicline, which is claimed to reduce nicotine cravings as well as the withdrawal many experience. The side effects are listed on the product information form that is included with all prescription medications, including Chantix. However, anyone using Chantix who has experienced one of the adverse side effects may be shocked when this happens to them.

Pfizer received approval for Chantix from the United States Food and Drug Administration in May of 2006. To view information about the warnings that followed, visit the site for Chantix.

Patients may also get answers to questions about Chantix and other smoke cessation products by speaking with a pharmacist. Serious side effects such as those reported by Chantix users should be considered before making a decision. Doctor's may warn patients about some side effects of Chantix or other prescription medication. However, being an informed consumer and learning as much as possible about a medication prescribed may save a persons life.
