Chapter Books Are a Great Way to Develop the Love of Reading

Debbie H.
Towards the end of first grade many students discover a new type of book- The Chapter Book. A chapter book makes the reader feel very grown up. Chapter books are more interesting than traditional picture books because they have more time to develop the character and story plot. When students read chapter books they feel very proud and this is a great way to develop a love for reading. There are many great chapter books for young readers to enjoy.

Magic Tree House is a Chapter Book About Adventures

This is a series about an eight year old boy named Jack and his seven year old sister, Annie. The two find a tree house in the woods near their house and find that the tree house is filled with books. The tree house is also magical and takes them through time. The two of them go on many adventures together and discover new places.

There are over 44 books in this series and most books are in the early to mid second grade reading level. After reading one book most children want to read more. The Magic Tree House series is very popular among second grade students.

A to Z Mysteries are Great for Mystery Lovers

Junie B. Jones is Funny and a Character Children can Relate to

Junie B. Jones is a series written by Barbara Park. In most of the books Junie B. Jones is a first grader and the books tell about day to day events in her life. There are almost 30 chapter books in this series. Children often find Junie B. Jones books easy to read and enjoy the stories. The only critique about these books is that Junie B. Jones doesn't always talk in proper English. It may be necessary for the parent to inform the child that Junie B. Jones sometimes makes mistakes in the way she talks.

Reading is a great way to increase a child's vocabulary. The more a child reads, the better vocabulary he will understand. When a child finds a chapter book series he/she likes, he will be more likely to read more in that series. Magic Tree House is a great adventure chapter book series. A to Z Mysteries is great for children that like to solve mysteries. Junie B. Jones is simple, fun reading that children can often relate to.

The Magic Tree House book series sounds similar to The Magic Attic Club book series. Same idea just an attic used for time traveling instead of a tree.

Excellent suggestions! I am an elementary school librarian so I sure see a lot of these. I love Magic Treehouse because all kids seem to like them. :)
