1) Chargers-Colts Head to Head
The Sunday Night Game of the Week features two strong offensive teams in San Diego and Indianapolis. Since 2004, the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts have played 6 times, with SD enjoying a 4-2 advantage. The Chargers has dominated the regular season meetings between the two teams, owning a winning record at Indianapolis's Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts has been the better team in the postseason, winning the last playoff meeting against SD in 2008.
2) Philip Rivers vs. Peyton Manning
Few quarterbacks have meant so much to their teams than Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning. The two quarterbacks have met four times, with Rivers winning 75% of the time. For the season, Rivers has thrown over 3170 yards with a league-leading 23 TDs. Manning is equally impressive having thrown for 3059 yards and 20 TDs. Manning has been the more consistent quarterback this season, playing well even in losses; he also has had to contend with injuries to some key offensive players. Rivers, the other hand, has provided some spectacular performances where he posted big offensive numbers.
3) Team Depth and Assessment
=>CONTINUE ON PAGE 2
The Indianapolis Colts is plagued by the injury bug, and is unlikely to be at full strength for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. Key players like RB Joseph Addai, linebackers Gary Brackett and Clint Session remain doubtful for the game. In the absence of Brackett and Session, the Colts allowed 31 points in last weekend's loss to New England. Granted that the Patriots is a strong offensive team, the absence of the two defesivemen was clearly felt. The Colts' defense will be under another big test, with the Chargers coming to town. On the offensive side, Peyton Manning has historically performed poorly against San Diego even at home. He will have to break that trend, if his team is to have any chance against the Chargers.
The San Diego Chargers comes into the contest, having won three straight games. Their success is largely due to the strong play of quarterback Philip Rivers. In the three games, Rivers posted impressive QB ratings of 106.8, 137.2, and 116.8 respectively. As San Diego has historically played well in the latter half of the regular season, the team looks primed to for another great run. Additionally, the Chargers' defense has fared extremely well against Peyton Manning and the Colts. The team is the clear favorite to win this game.
My prediction for the 2010 NFL regular season game between the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts: SD wins the game by the score of 35-26. Kickoff time for the game is 8:20 PM EST. The game is played at Lucas Oil Stadium. NBC Sports will broadcast the highly anticipated affair.
