How Does Giving Make You Feel?

Kathy Foust
Even if you're someone who isn't doing so great financially, there are many ways that you can offer charity to someone. I personally don't believe in cash donations because I'm someone who wants immediate gratification from my charitable actions. Many people do donate to nonprofit agencies as a way to commit themselves in a charitable manner.

Feeling good is more than just being happy at your job or with your family. Your own actions can help you to improve your mental health status without that even being the goal. One quote I recently heard from an anonymous friend was that "you can never feel bad if you are doing something that makes you feel good". They added to that that charity to someone you don't like is the ultimate way to feel good since you're doing something nice and confusing the person all at once.

The goal of charity should not be thanks. Don't expect it because some people simply won't give it and may not appreciate what you do as much as you think they should. eliminate this thought process from your mind and make your charitable actions completely selfish. That's right, all you need to worry about when you do something for someone else is that it makes you feel good, not them.

There are many ways to give charity. It can be done in the form of cash, food, friendship, a ride somewhere or an offer of a specific skill set. Projects like Habitat for Humanity are a great demonstration of just such actions. Maybe you know someone who has very little money for food. Would it be so hard to take them a plate of leftovers? Think about how good that would make you feel.

Keep in mind that bragging about committing a charitable act is not what charity is about at all. In fact, it only takes away from the act itself. Giving to someone in need is about a personal state of mind, not a pat on the back.

Not only do charitable acts make you feel good about giving, but they also provide a service to the community. That means you are inadvertently spreading positive energy, something the world is always in great need of. These acts often cause a ripple effect when people learn of them. They may even give someone else an idea of how they can be charitable.

Why not share your skills or whatever you have to offer? You can more of an impact on the world than you may realize and in doing so, serve your own mental health in a positive way.
