Classic Charles Dickens Novels Bring to the Silver Screen Some of the Most Memorable Characters and Heartwarming Stories in Literature

Charles Dickens films and movies bring his best novels to life in motion pictures. Dickens is famous for his amazing characters and complex story lines. A common theme in Dickens films, as in his novels, is the poor faithful struggling orphan making his or her way through an ugly world to a bright ending. Charles Dickens never disappoints.
  1. "A Christmas Carol."
    The classic Charles Dickens Christmas tale about our favorite old miser Ebenezer Scrooge has been remade in film several times giving many generations the opportunity to enjoy one of the most beloved Christmas stories. Scrooge is visited by three angels on Christmas Eve and gets a big reality check.
  2. "A Tale of Two Cities."
    Hands down the best film version of this classic Charles Dickens story was made in 1935. This classic tale of love and intrigue during the French Revolution stars Ronald Colman as Sydney Carton, Elizabeth Allan as Lucie Manette, Edna May Oliver as Miss Pross, and Basil Rathbone as Marquis St. Evremonde.
  3. "Oliver Twist."
    The Charles Dickens beloved tale of the poor orphaned boy has been made into film in many ways including animation and a very popular musical. Each adaptation gives audiences the joy of experiencing the rich characters of the story like the dynamic Fagin, the dangerous Bill Sikes, the loving Nancy, and the crafty Artful Dodger.
  4. "Nicholas Nickleby."
    Another Charles Dickens timeless tales of an empathetic young man Nicholas Nickleby who struggles to save his mother and sister from the ravishing of his unscrupulous uncle Ralph Nickleby. The story follows Nicholas after his father's death, losing their comfortable lifestyle, and into destitution. Wonderful story of perseverance with many different of film versions available.
  5. "David Copperfield."
    David Copperfield is tormented by his new and very cruel step father Mr. Murdstone until the death of his mother. David is sent to London by Mr. Murdstone to earn his own living. Life is horrendous for David until he runs away to live with his Aunt Betsey. Each character is rich and full in typical Charles Dickens style. Available in several film versions most made for television.
  6. "The Old Curiosity Shop."
    A story of young orphan Nell Trent and the grandfather she lives with at the old curiosity shop whose lives change when the shop is taken by the heartless moneylender Quilp for the grandfather's gambling debts. Nell and the grandfather flee and are pursued by Quilp and by her greedy brother Frederick. There are several film versions and made for television versions of this Charles Dickens classic.
  7. "Great Expectations."
    The young orphan Pip has a chance encounter with a convict that he helps that takes him into a life changed forever and a mysterious benefactor who aids him. A wonderful tale of love, heartbreak, and hope complete with amazing characters. Many versions, including a modernized movie, are available.
  8. "The Pickwick Papers." Three members of the Pickwick Club, Mr. Nathaniel Winkle, Mr. Augustus Snodgrass, and Mr. Tracy Tupman set out on a journey through the English countryside by coach to learn more about common life and report on what they find. The journey brings unexpected results from several misunderstandings. There are only a few different versions of this Charles Dickens story available.
