Depp's movie came out right around this game's release, and Global Star wanted to place kids in front of there TV's and see Charlie and Willy up close and personal. I don't know if this would be your typical classic all around game, but it has some goods about it. Me personally aren't into these types of games, but I tried it out, because the movie was pretty good and I like to lay a game and review it for other people. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about a young boy who lives with his whole family. They are cramped up together in a bed, and don't have much money. This boy looks forward to his birthday, because he gets a Wonka bar. One day Charlie hears Wonka is holding a contest for five lucky people to visit his factory that puzzles everyone. This game plays the movie pretty well, but instead of going on an all out adventure, Charlie must group up Oompa Loompas and force them to work for him to progress. Sounds tedious? Not really, but it can get a little annoying.
When I first looked at this game, I saw that the graphics were pretty decent. For a remade movie video game, Global Star didn't do half bad, but if you're looking for a real adventure game, this wouldn't be your type. The graphics kind of remind you of Spyro the Dragon, which had nice graphics, and featured a nice storyline. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory plays Charlie in the third person and the visuals around him are actually pretty nice. But will colors and stunning images make this game a real hit? No... This game still has some bums that people should know about.
Let's get right down to what Charlie mainly has to do. He has to group up a bunch of Oompa Loompas and force them to do there job, so he can progress in the game. If this isn't boring enough, than the sounds the Oompa Loompas make are. Global could of done a much better job on this, and even thought this wouldn't be a true title to give your extreme gamer, it should of been a lot better. Charlie can use candy as weapons, like the Everlasting Gobstopper. He may throw this around, so he doesn't get injured, which is a cute way of saying childish violence, but hey if it works, it works. If you are 6 through 15, you will enjoy this game. If you are younger you wouldn't know the difference, and if you are older, you would think this is a sad make of a video game. I myself didn't find it all that terrible, but it wouldn't be a game I would cherish.
When we tried out the controls, we were a bit shocked at how easy they actually were. Then again when you only have to walk around, gather Oompa Loompas, and progress through the game by making them work, work, work... It shouldn't be that hard to control, but you'd be surprised. When Charlie uses an attack, like throwing a piece of candy, he must toggle between other buttons to move Oompa Loompas, and that can get pretty tedious. I would have to say the controls are this games best feature.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this game to many gamers, but if you are a younger kid, or younger kid at heart, and are into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory then I say go for it. The game won't really keep our satisfied for that long, and puzzles me to why they even made this game. The movie is better, believe me, so I recommend you go see that before you play this. I am sorry to say I have to give this a 5 out of 10. Good Try Global!
