Is Marriage Counseling the Answer to Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller Problems?

Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller are reportedly going to go into marriage counseling in order to salvage their relationship. They have been the subject of many internet searches after Charlie Sheen was arrested in Aspen Colorado and charged with second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief. The story is that there was domestic disagreement between Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller started on the evening of December 24, Christmas Eve and continued to escalate.

Charlie Sheen was then taken into custody after his wife made a call for help to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department and that call resulted in Charlie Sheen spending most of Christmas Day in jail and his mug shot was shopped all over the web. Sheen was released late on Christmas Day after posting $8500 in bail money. His trial date is set for February 8th, 2010.

According to People.com, The couple is expected to undergo marriage counseling and Charlie Sheen will undergo anger management therapy. As stated by their attorney Richard Cummins, "They have two children together and they love one another and they're going to work through what is a difficult time and they're going to do that together and as privately as possible."

They will need a lot of luck if counseling is going to help them. Here in the United States 1.5 million marriages end in divorce every year. In the same year there are 2.5 million marriages. Not good statistics for any long term marriage relationship. But there is hope.

Research from the Family Marriage Counseling site, shows that there are positive trends for outcomes on marriage counseling. If the couple goes all the way through the marriage counseling process then they are 75% better off than other couples that try to work things out on their own without marriage counseling.

Further hope shows that 65% percent of couples report "significant" improvement in their marriage satisfaction. So most couples do benefit from marriage counseling. Let's hope that Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller can benefit, they need a strong marriage to help support their twin boys that were just born in March.

However they will need to be very careful with whom they select to go to for marriage counseling. According to Willard Harley, Jr., Ph.D. a Licensed Psychologist and author 80% of all Marriage Counselors in private practice in the U.S. say they conduct marriage counseling. But only 12% are in a profession that requires them to take just one course dedicated to dealing with couples.

I always suspected that he was playing himself in "Two and a Half Men." A misogynistic hedonist.

I'm glad to see a positive approach to their problems. I hope Mr. Sheen gets the help he needs. Marriage is difficult any way you look at it.

I'm glad you provided the cautions about marriage counseling and what courses are required to be a counselor.
