Charlie Weis is Giving Up the Playcalling for Notre Dame Football?

I'm not too sure I agree with Charlie Weis's decision to give up the offensive playcalling. I'm sure Weis doesn't care that I don't agree, but take it from me; my opinion is worth listening to.

First, Weis was brought to Notre Dame as the head football coach because he is supposed to be an offensive genius. What he did with the New England Patriots in winning their three Superbowls was regarded as one of the best offensive coaching jobs in a long time. Especially since many found those Patriots teams to be extremely lacking talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Weis was supposed to bring that same Midas touch to Southbend. It would seem that he did just that, except when faced with opponents with comparable talent, the Fighting Irish offense often came up short in his first four efforts against them. Yes, they did put up enough points to compete with USC and Michigan, but they didn't put up enough to win, which is the job of an offensive guru.

But even if you want to say that he did the job there in those rivalry games, and that the team's lack of talent on defense due to a poor job of recruiting by Ty Willingham was the reason for there losses to Notre Dame's two rivalries, then I must point out this out. Which is that in each of his first bowl games, Weis was blown out of the water, and the offense did not even put up its season averages on offense. In 2006, they were blown out by Ohio State 34-20 in a game that was further apart than the score indicates. And they were blown out by LSU in 2007 41-14. Where's the offensive genius?

So now Weis wants to hand over the playcalling duties to someone else? I don't accept that!

Weis claims that this is a move to become a better coach, and that he sought out the advice of several coaches, including Bill Belichick prior to making this decision. My problem with that is that Belichick is a coach in the NFL, where the coach has far more responsibility and liability than a college coach. An NFL coach also has to put more time into his craft. College coaches can work a normal workday with their players, and be on the front nine before the evening news comes on. So if Weis were told that giving up the playcalling duties would better help him oversee everything else that is going on with the team, I would say that he is very capable of doing that without giving up playcalling. Especially when successful NFL coaches have done the playcalling en route to Superbowl victories.

Weis's decision to give up the playcalling is the sign of a failure on his part. He has yet to have out coached any of the opposing defensive coordinators of his rival programs. He is 0-2 in bowl games. And his offense looked atrocious in his third season, and them being young is no excuse. This move had better fix it, or else the offensive guru from Notre Dame, might have to lose his title.
