Chartering a Private Jet

Empty Legs, One-Ways, Deadheads.....What Is the Difference?

Rick Colson
When chartering a private jet, empty legs and one-way aircraft may be available at a greatly reduced cost. These aircraft are able to travel a certain direction at reduced pricing. They can be part of a roving or floating fleet where they do not need to return to a base, or they have dropped of their owner and are returning to base empty, for example. Let's clarify the difference in the type of opportunities and what they mean:

Empty legs are created when an aircraft itself needs to move for one reason or another. Reasons include to pick up it's owner, or returning home from a factory servicing, or returning to base after dropping a charter passenger off. This need to move the aircraft can result in low point-to-point pricing, and can be the absolute best values in private jet charter.

Deadhead is a term synonymous with Empty Leg, in which the aircraft needs to fly empty, without passengers. Instead of a "live" flight leg, it is a "dead" flight leg.

One-ways are using an aircraft in a certain route or direction of flight where the plane does not need to return to base. The aircraft picks up a succssion of paying passengers from flight to flight that are linked by landing and then departing in the same general region. One-ways are a great value since the aircraft does not need to return to a base, and no daily minimums apply.

In taking advantage of private jet charter empty legs and one-ways, they can be located by using almost any charter operator or charter brokerage service. Be sure to ask of their availability for your desired routing. Often it will depend on the company's fleet or reach. Local operators will often have empty legs on their aircraft, and brokerage companys will conduct a search nationwide for your need. Jet card companies and fractional providers will typcially not have the reduced price availability, as their business model is fixed pricing for any given route. Be aware of the empty leg or one-way possibilites for your flight, it can save you thousands when flying privately.
