Charting Your Path as an Associated Content Writer: Things You Need to Consider

Kelly Spies
Associated Content gives writers the ability to write whatever they want, gain an audience and maybe get paid for doing it. Associated Content is not a charity organization to the surprise of many. Associated Content is in the business of web content and if you want to be a successful writer for Associated Content then you need to make some decisions.

Defining your reputation - Before you begin to pour out your heart and soul on paper, put the pen down and make a purposeful decision on how you want to be perceived by your readers. The titles of your content will give your readers their first impression of who you are. Do you want to be a news reporter, comedy writer, storyteller or product reviewer? The decision is up to you, but your reputation in essence will be a part in determining your upfront payments. Read on to find out how.

Upfront or Performance Payment - The type of content you write will be a huge factor in whether or not you will receive an offer on an article. Associated Content is not generally looking for opinion pieces or book reviews, however on occasion when written the right way, can garner payment.

Humorous articles, while highly enjoyed, are not what draws in a paycheck most of the time. If your goal as a writer for Associated Content is to write comedy pieces then most likely you will become known as a comedy writer. Remember what I said about reputations? Your reputation as a comedy writer could have the potential to draw in page views but it may not get you an offer.

If you are all about the joy of being read and don't mind getting paid for page views then by all means submit for performance payment but if your goal is to make a living writing at Associated Content then you will need to write what is known as web content.

The choice is yours, and there is no right or wrong here but if you find yourself in the predicament of getting constant rejections, take a look at your content and the reputation you are building with it and make a choice. Will you submit to be read or will you submit to earn a living?

Stick to what you know - There are content producers that follow this rule of thumb almost too literally. Writing for a niche might be where the money is at but if you write a gazillion articles on the same topic you will eventually over saturate it. They key to writing niche is not to just write about the same topic but to write within the same field.

For example, if you are an expert in dream analysis and you write a hundred articles analyzing dreams you will run out of content. This could be expanded on by writing articles about different aspects of dreaming and the medical effects it has on people.

Write what you know but be careful not to get stuck in the rut of writing the same thing over and over in different ways.

Friend or Foe- Associated Content is a community where writers can network with other writers. Those who believe they don't have to participate in the community because their work speaks for itself are deluding themselves. Don't be afraid to make friends with the other writers at Associated Content. Not only will you find valuable information to help you grow as a writer but you will also gather readers.

Just like working at a regular job, you can hurt yourself by not being friendly with your coworkers. Nobody wants to work with someone who thinks they're too good to associate with.

Get out there and mingle with the other writers at Associated Content and you might be amazed by the circle of friends you develop and to top it off earn readers out of a fantastic group of experienced writers.

Where you go with Associated Content is up to you. You have the ability to control your path here so make some conscious decisions on how you want it to go and work towards that. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

Great article. I agree that the networking is a big part of getting more page views; I haven't been participating to the AC Forum much but I got to read many AC producers' articles through comments made by them on my articles.

Great advice, Kelly! Like jcorn said, this is an excellent article for newbies to read. I love the forums, although lately I've spent more time there than actually writing! *grins*

Kelly, this is excellent advice. I've only been with AC for two months but I've already found that being active in the forums is beneficial. I've met many talented writers, received tons of helpful advice, and had a few laughs too. Thanks for sharing what you've learned! :)
