Chattahoochee National Forest: Great Outdoors Month in Georgia

Georgia's Forests Will Take Your Breath Away: Great Outdoors in GA

Amy Barnes
The air is cool as the foggy mists rise through the morning. The first jogger cuts through the brush to get to the next trail. One mile down, more to go. The trees gently shelter these runners from the harsh glare of the sun, tropical green screens shielding them from the harsh day that rushes bye along the roads.

Children gasp in delight as they fan out a spray of water from a creek that runs from the Chattahoochee River. They were hot and ready for a break from walking. Snacks have been eaten, containers have been tucked away, and it's time to play. The water is a cool, body-quenching toy for hot little children.

A cheerful volunteer offers a bright smile and a heart-warming positive attitude as she points to one of our feathered neighbors recuperating in an avian cage. Broken wings are mended and cage-mates are set free upon recovery.

A daughter in conflict runs out to the backyard, jumps the house fence, and crosses the road; home free. She walks through the forest on the hiking trails, contemplating. A large green spider hanging on its web watches but does not judge; it's just there to survive, just like the girl. The lush greenery provides a sheltering, calming safe place for those who just need that five-minute walk 'n talk. It's also an endless source of inspiration to artists.

A couple embraces, turns, and tosses out bread to the geese. Loud honking ensues as the battle for the food starts. Feathers fly as the birds scatter across the river bed in search of bread crumbs. This is their anniversary, and they are happy; they have chosen to share their joy with Nature.

And now me: I arrive on the scenes to live my little bit of adventure out - my daughter squeals in delight, ready and rarin' to run, and my infant son coos along from the safety of my arms. I stare at the hubby and we both laugh. We're here in Marietta, GA, we're exploring for adventure (and stories), and all is well.

It's Great Outdoors Month, and I'm determined to have that family time I've waited so long to have. This is America, and we're free to enjoy it while we have it; the Chattahoochee National Forest is my early Mother's Day gift to myself - we're here on my day off, and we're having fun. This forest is divided up into several areas, each with their own mini-adventures to be had. It's huge, and the fun never really ends.

So hurry - the forest is waiting, and the time to enjoy it is NOW.
