Cheap Accommodation: Top Five Hostels in Suva, Fiji

Blair Mathis
When you see an ad for vacationing in Fiji, no doubt the first thought on your mind is expense. Fiji, a small paradise in the middle of the ocean, is known for being an expensive vacation, one that is generally out of the reach of average vacationers.

Fortunately, this isn't true. Expenses are relative, and it is actually very possible to take a vacation to Fiji with a small budget. Because accommodation is one of the largest expenses for any trip, looking for a cheap, yet enjoyable place to stay is a must. Hostels are the best place to look, usually offering cheaper prices than hotels and resorts. This is because hostels are smaller, usually privately owned, and don't offer the amenities of hotels that drive the price up.

If you're planning a trip to one of the most popular destinations in Fiji - Suva - and you're looking for some inexpensive hostels to stay in, this article is for you. Below is a list of the top five hostels in Suva, Fiji.

Raintree Lodge

The Raintree Lodge is a hostel in Suva located near the edge of the rainforest, hence it's name. The hostel offers private rooms for $14 Euro a night, and has multilingual staff for travelers from all parts of the world.

Raintree, unlike many other hostels, does not have a curfew, so you won't be restricted in your activities. Hot showers are available 24/7, a nice feature, as some places in Fiji only have hot water at certain times.

While there are shared and private rooms, the Lodge also offers four Bures, which are essentially private huts detached from the main building. The Bures are more expensive, but offer added amenities like TV, bar, and balcony.

South Seas Private Hostel

This hostel is a popular location because of it's cheap dorm beds. A bed is priced at approximately $16USD a night, and the hostel itself is situated in a convenient location. In addition to shared dorm rooms, this hostel also offers single and double rooms, as well as family rooms.

Vale Ni Tadra

This hostel is more expensive than most others, with a price of approximately $20 Euro per nght. However, you've never stayed in a hostel like this. Aimed to make your stay luxurious and comfortable, the Vale Ni Tadra has a beautiful, modern, exotic design, and offers air conditioning in each room. Breakfast is included, and cable TV and wifi are also available.

Colonial Lodge

This beautiful hostel is more like a comfortable guest house, and costs $17 USD a night. It is bungalow style and located near a large expanse of water, surrounded by tall trees and rolling meadows. The Colonial lodge is quiet and clean, and offers free breakfast and an option for homemade dinners every night.

The bus station is a three minute walk away, and all the other locations you could want are within a comfortable distance, including: theaters, grocery stores, swimming pool, the local flea market, and other downtown features.

Townhouse Apartment Hotel

Though this building calls itself both an apartment and a hotel, it is, in actuality, a hostel, and is located in the center of downtown Suva. It is priced at $18 USD a night, and offers shared and private rooms. Some of the more expensive rooms are self-contained apartments, meaning they have a private bathroom and kitchen.

Each room comes with air conditioning, refrigerator, coffee maker, TV with Sky Channels, personal bathrooms, on-demand hot water, telephone (select rooms), and alarm clocks.
