When searching for the best prices, there are a few things to keep in mind. The most important thing is to keep your travel dates flexible. Trying to fly on a specific day may increase the price of a plane ticket substantially. If you can find a way to adjust your travel days within a few days, you may be able to save a good portion of money.
Another way to get a great price is booking your flight in advance. Some people say 2 weeks is a long enough notice, but I try to go for a month or more. By purchasing your airfare in advance, you will be given much cheaper rates than if you were to book it a few days prior to leaving.
Of course if you fly in the middle of the week, it is a cheaper fare. Weekend flights are always more expensive, because most people can fly at that time. Sometimes a flight into a neighboring airport gets you a cheaper airfare. It is quite easy to get trains from these airports into your town. The websites of Travelocity and Orbitz can make an automatic search for neighboring airports for you.
One tip that will help save money regardless of when you are booking your flight is flying on weekdays. Weekend flights are always more expensive because the majority of people prefer these days due to their schedules. From personal experience, I have found that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days of the week.
Flying for the holidays? This can be the most expensive time to purchase a plane ticket. There are so many people flying around the world to visit friends and family that the prices skyrocket due to demand. The best workaround for this is to fly on the actual day of the holiday if you can mange. Airports are far less busy on holidays because everyone plans to fly before or after the holiday. This leaves low demand for flights, which can knock the price down quite a bit.
If you are planning to fly one-way, never count out the fact that a round-trip could actually be cheaper. Depending on the location and airline, you might actually be able to purchase a round-trip ticket for substantially less. You can then fly to your destination and tear up your returning ticket. This can vary, so make sure to check the prices for both one-way and return flights.
When looking up airfares, there is no secret formula to ensure that you receive the best rates. Therefore, it is important to do the research your self. Make sure to visit multiple sites when looking for airfare. This will ensure that you get the cheapest rate you can find. Some sites I recommend include Expedia and Priceline.
