The school year is fast approaching, and there are a few essentials every student should consider purchasing. However, most sites will suggest these high cost gadgets for your student, but I won't. My top five gadgets and gizmo's for returning students will work just as great and cost you a lot less.
Laptop
Dells and Toshiba's are two of the top brands in laptops. However, they will both cost you well over $600, yet you can get an off brand anywhere between $250 and $400. Some of the most famous off brand names include Acer and eMachines, and both work just as effectively as a name brand laptop.
Laptops are becoming an essential part of schools, especially for doing research papers. You can type up your report via Microsoft Word (or another writing program), create power point presentations, and even browse the web for research.
Memory Stick
Many sites will suggest these high tech gadgets but for less than $20 you can purchase a memory stick. Memory sticks are a great way of backing up all of your papers and research information. One of the best parts about them is they easily work on every computer, allowing you to quickly transfer your work from one system to another. Another great thing about memory sticks is they come in handy when having to do power point presentations.
eReaders
eReaders are another great gadget for returning student because you can easily download any book or research item. With the eReader you can save lots of trips to the library, as long as you know what type of book you need. However, there is a downside to eReaders. For ever book you download, it will cost you money.
Cell Phone
Smartphones are the trend because you can do pretty much everything on them, including surfing the web. However, for a college student or a high school, the cost of the phone bills can be a bit high. For $45 a month, you can get unlimited phone and internet through Straight Talk.
Music is a good way to help relax and, for some, to focus on the task at hand. iPad's are great way to carry your music with you wherever you go. However, they are very costly and for under $50 you can get a MP3 player that will work just as great.

The one place that eReaders (like Kindle) can actually save money is for those students who are studying classic literature. Ebooks from authors such as Jane Austen, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, and others are actually FREE on Amazon. Their copyrights have expired, and there is no charge to download and read them on ereaders or on a laptop.
