Cheap Bohemian Decorating Ideas for an Apartment

Bohemian décor is a reflection of a way of life that embraced frugality and creativity. Often associated with gypsies, bohemian living is unconventional, yet practical. Cheap, bohemian decorating isn't hard to accomplish-an authentic look can be obtained using a variety of vintage and used fabrics and furniture. Employ bold, bright colors and intricate patterns using various textiles found at thrift stores and clearance racks to achieve your bohemian look.

Cheap Bohemian Decorating Ideas for an Apartment

Walls

Painting each wall or ceiling a vivid orange or deep red is a great way to achieve the bohemian look. Each wall should have a different color or print. However, if you don't own your apartment, this may not be an option. Instead, detail your walls with large fabrics. Cloth blinds are a great, bohemian decorating idea. Turn a colored cloth blind widthwise and hang it across your wall. Or keep it as is and drape it across your door. Pier1 imports have dozens of bohemian style blinds and curtains. To remain within your budget, only buy from the clearance corner.

Another decorating idea for your walls is to drape an oriental rug, dupatta or sari across your walls or ceiling. The ceiling décor will darken the room and help you achieve a soft, warm look.

Another idea for your door is to wallpaper it.

Seating

A popular bohemian decorating idea is using floor pillows to help you achieve your laid-back look. World Market and Ross have carried them from time to time. A cheaper option is to convert long, old sofa pillows into floor pillows. Look for sofas on big trash day in nicer neighborhoods in your area. Once you've washed the covers and aired out the stuffing, use fabric paint and floral stencils to convert your pillows into bohemian décor. Toss them in a corner of your living room or bedroom.

If your sofa doesn't mesh with your theme, one idea for decorating it is to drape a colorful sheet across it for an inexpensive sofa cover. Or visit your local IKEA to find a variety of cheap sofa covers.

Accessories

Mismatched table lamps, mismatched pillows, cheap paper lanterns like those found at Pier1 imports and vintage, candles, tassels, beaded curtains, canvas art make great bohemian decorating ideas. Wallpaper a popcorn tin or cardboard box for a bohemian wastebasket. Spruce up a coffee or end table with wallpaper.

To those if us of a certain age and of a certain experience and mindset, 'Bohemian' is not cheap, but personally stylized and real. The low cost is value added to genuineness of self-expression.

Guess I was already Bohemian and didn't know it. By the way, this article came up in my inbox as "Associated Content" and "has been published" etc. Your name wasn't even on it anywhere. Don't know if others are being done the same way or not, but I have others in my inbox that I haven't opened.

I love Pier1 Imports! Unfortunately, shopping there is not conducive to the Bohemian budget... Great article!
