Cheap Budget: Baby Shower Party Ideas

Mary Starr Johnson-Gerard, Ph.D.
Given the economical trials and tribulation of these times, planning a baby shower that has a goal to be nice, fun and memorable, yet keep to a cheap budget, is not as much of a challenge as one might think. Hosting a baby shower is a nice, loving thing to do for a friend or relative. A baby shower is a chance to share a rite of passage with a soon-to-be mom and a way to help a new family prepare for the new arrival. Some things to think about, to keep the baby shower budget cheap-yet nice, are party invitations, party decorations, party foods and baby shower location.

Cheap Baby Shower Invitations

A major cost of traditional baby showers is the expense and time that goes into purchasing baby shower invitations, filling them in, addressing envelopes and paying for snail-mail postage. A much cheaper way to invite guests to a baby shower is to use technology such as: e-mail, electronic invitation websites and text messaging. Each of these techniques allows you to compose a sweet message and to distribute the invitation en mass to many potential guests. Some websites that offers free baby shower e-vites are: punchbowl.com, smilebox.com and desievite.com.

Cheap Recycle Baby Shower Decorations

Reusing old decorations is an earth friendly as well as budget friendly way to perk up a baby shower. Some things you can do to keep the baby shower within your budget are to: reuse baby shower decorations you hopefully have saved from a previous baby shower, brighten up the party by hanging strings of lights you have around the house from other holiday decorations or lights used on the deck. Go to a thrift store and buy baby toys, or use your own if you have children, and put these around the room or on the refreshment table. While at the thrift store, look for nice infant clothing to artistically used on the refreshment table or around the room where the baby shower is happening .

Cheap Budget Baby Shower Refreshments

Probably, without a doubt, the most costly budget item for a baby shower is the food to be served to guests. Coming up a close second, for not being cheap, are the pretty paper products used for serving. A very simple thing to do, to save money on the baby shower, is not to use paper serving products, rather use your own dishes or china.

Another idea, for staying within a cheap baby shower budget, is to host a pot luck and ask guests to each bring a dish to share. If not a pot luck, then ask guests to bring a favorite appetizer. Instead of buying all of the food products for the baby shower, make them at home and save the extra cost of having someone else do the cooking and or baking. Cake mixes and fresh vegetables are cheaper than purchased cakes and veggie plates.

Cheap Budget Baby Shower Shower Locations

It seems like today, there are many baby showers being hosted at restaurants. Some restaurants let you use their rooms to hold a baby shower as long as you spend a certain amount of money on food and beverages. Hosting a baby shower at a restaurant can quickly blow your baby shower budget, unless guests are prepared to cover the costs of whatever they eat and drink. If this is the plan, let guests know well ahead of time - like when the invitation iss sent to them - that whatever they eat and drink, they will pay for at the baby shower. For a cheap budget location, host the baby shower at home.
