Cheap Campgrounds in Moab, Utah

Quenton Kappids
There are many small campgrounds in Moab, Utah that are owned by the Bureau of Land Management, or BLM. Each area generally has 6-12 campsites, most with just a fire ring and picnic table. The sites cost between $8-12 per night, and payments are put in a drop box that is emptied daily. Each of these areas has its own pit toilet, but no running water or electricity.

A great place to find very scenic campsites is on Kane Creek Road southwest of downtown Moab. There are three different areas on this road with campsites. The furthest one is about 8 miles down Kane Creek Road. After about 4 miles on this road, it becomes very narrow. It is wide enough for one car, so there are places to pull off the road to let oncoming cars get through. If you are afraid of heights, you might not like driving on this road. There are many places where a dropoff of a couple hundred feet is just a few feet outside your window, with no guardrail in sight.

The Kings Bottom camping area is 2.8 miles from Highway 191 on Kane Creek Road, and it has 7 sites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. It is $12 per night to stay here. The view of the Moab Rim Trail is very scenic, but these sites do not have much vegetation to provide shade.

The Moonflower camping area is 3.0 miles from Highway 191, and has 8 tent sites. Each site has a fire ring. The fee is just $8 per night. These sites have lots of trees that can provide shade.

The Hunter's Canyon camping area is 7.8 miles from Highway 191 and has 13 sites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The fee is $8 per night. The sites in this area have a few trees for shade, and the high surrounding canyon walls can also provide shade early in the evening.

In addition to the campgrounds along Kane Creek Road, there are also 12 campgrounds on Highway 128 ranging from 1-30 miles off of Highway 191. There are three campgrounds along Highway 279, and three campgrounds along Highway 313. There is one campground on Ken's Lake, one in the Sand Flats Recreation Area, and two in the Canyon Rims Recreation Area. These are all BLM campgrounds, so fees are likely to be low but amenities are limited.
