Instead of getting your tree from a Christmas tree lot in a gas station parking lot or a fake tree from a big box retailer, why not go to a Christmas tree farm and cut down your own? It's a cheaper option and you can make a day of it. Many tree farms offer a lot more than just Christmas trees - sleigh rides, hay rides, food and drink, art galleries, and more! The Minneapolis / Twin Cities Metro area has several inexpensive tree farms offering more than just Christmas trees - here's a closer look at some in the area.

Minneapolis / Twin Cities Christmas Tree Farms: Hansen Tree Farms
This huge, 40-acre tree farm is located 5 miles from Anoka, MN. Once a sand dune, now this land is a mature pine tree forest with towering trees. Staff members provide customers with saws and a farm map. Then you're let loose in the farm to chop down your own tree. Tree prices range from $50-$65 (plus tax) and include netting, disposal bag, twine, and assistance loading your tree on your car if needed. Free hot cocoa, cider, and sausage are available for customers. They also have an artisan gallery with crafts from local artists.

Hansen Tree Farms is open Friday - Sunday, starting the Friday after Thanksgiving through the holidays.

Minneapolis / Twin Cities Christmas Tree Farms: Wolcyn Tree Farms
This inexpensive tree farm is located in Cambridge, Minnesota-only 15 minutes from the Twin Cities metro area. T Several Christmas tree species are available at this farm: Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, Canaan Fir, Scotch Pine, and White Pine. Wolcyn Tree Farms offers tree shaking, bailing, and a free disposal bag with every tree purchase. An on-site gift shop is available with a wide variety of trinkets including coffee mugs, sweatshirts, wreaths, and personalized ornaments. Minneapolis / Twin Cities Christmas Tree Farms: Kruegar Farms
This tree farm in Lake Elmo, MN. They offer several different tree species, including more exotic types such as Canaan Fir, Korean Fir, and Meyer's Spruce. Included with every tree purchase is a tree shaking, disposal bag, and a complimentary car tie-down by staff members.

They also offer a tag-a-tree weekend, during the second weekend of October. This event allows customers to visit the farm, pick out their tree, and "tag" it. Then, when it gets closer to Christmas, customers can come back and pick out their tree. This gives you first-dibs on the best Christmas trees-plus you won't have to trot around picking out a tree in the cold December weather.

Minneapolis / Twin Cities Christmas Tree Farms: St. Croix Valley Trees
Just across the border in Western Wisconsin lies St. Croix Valley Tree Farm. This fun-filled t(and cheap!) tree farm is an excellent spot if you're looking to make a day of it. There are plenty of activities going on, including puppet shows, a hide-and-seek area, a straw tunnel mountain, wagon rides, and a children's play area. There's also a lot of stuff to see, such as "The World's Largest Gumball Machine", a 100-year old barn, a player piano, gift shop, Santa, and more. Leashed pets are welcome, so don't leave Fido at home.

Tree prices are reasonable, starting at only $22 and credit cards and cash are accepted. Shaking, drilling, and netting are all complimentary services provided for each tree purchased.     Wolcyn Tree Farms isn't 15 minutes from the Twin Cities, it is an hour and 15 minutes.
