Cheap and Easy Home Improvement Projects to Give Your Home a Face Lift

Doing a complete remodel of your home is usually cost-prohibitive, but there is no reason you can't still give your abode a facelift. There are several cheap and easy ways to freshen up your home and do it yourself.

Replace Faucets

Replacing faucets in your bathroom or kitchen is an easy project that anyone can do. It might seem like a minor thing, but subtle changes can make a noticeable difference in the appearance of your home.

Choose a faucet that is functional but is also pleasing to the eye. There are a number of beautiful and inexpensive faucets available at local home improvement stores (Lowe's, Home Depot. Menards) for around $50, give or take.

If you have never replaced a faucet yourself, this is an easy project to complete. See How to Replace a Bathroom Faucet for tips.

Paint

Paint is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to refresh your home. Painting walls or simply adding decorative elements with paint can create an update that is sure to please.

Replace Knobs and Handles

New knobs, handles and drawer pulls in your kitchen and bathroom can create a simple refresh in your home. While these useful elements may seem to be completely utilitarian, replacing them with beautiful, decorative or unique knobs and handles can actually create an understated upgrade. See Tips for Choosing New Kitchen Cabinet Handles and Knobs for some ideas and pointers.

Rugs

If your living room carpet is old and worn like mine, a large area rug can serve a dual purpose. It can create a new look and feel in the room and it can hide the ugly or damaged carpet. As much as I would love to rip up my living room carpet and replace it with laminate flooring, money is an issue. A large area rug is the solution at this time.

In the same way, adding new and colorful rugs in a kitchen or bathroom can create a brand new look and feel for very little cost. In a bathroom, a new rug set coupled with a new matching shower curtain can create the impression of a completely different room. Add a new faucet and some paint to your vanity and voila! - a refreshed bathroom.

Light Fixtures

This is a project that should only be undertaken by someone who is experienced with home electrical wiring. If you are not, do not attempt to do this yourself - hire an electrician. It will be cheaper than hospital or funeral bills.

Replacing old, dated light fixtures with newer ones or replacing fixtures with ceiling fans is a simple upgrade for a home. If cost is an issue and you are experienced enough to replace the fixtures yourself, opt for replacing them one room at a time.

These are just a few of the simple and easy home improvement projects you can undertake to give your home a face lift or a fresh new look. Take a look around your home and you will undoubtedly notice other small things that can be done easily and cheaply.

I have to get a significant amount of structural work fixed first, then I'll be tackling some of these smaller projects (because I won't have any money left!).

Moving every 3 to 5 years to a newly built house works too.
