Cheap and Easy Ideas for Basement Flooring

Scott Kessman

Due to the fact that a basement is very often below ground level it is very often prone to dampness and mildew; choosing the right basement flooring can become difficult. The often damp environment will ensure that flooring has to be renewed on a regular basis. For this reason cheaper products could become the best option, just because a product is more expensive it does not mean it will last any longer. The idea of a completely damp free basement in the U.S. is an illusion and does not exist so accepting this fact and planning accordingly is the only alternative.

Taking tests to determine just how much moisture gets into your basement is an option but the chances of being able to do anything about it are slim to non-existent. As a result of this, the cheapest option is best; the only other deciding factor should be is it able to withstand the effects of being exposed to dampness and for what duration.

There are a number of options when considering basement flooring but it is the damp that must determine a final choice. If your basement is reasonably dry, then painting the floor could be a cost effective option with alternatives such as latex, epoxy or concrete based products. For added effect, different colored patterns can be formed to take away the drab finish that a plain concrete floor can provide.

Once again, for basement flooring for a basement that is not too damp, carpet could be an option. But a house owner must be aware that the ingress of too much moisture will result in a carpet responding to the damp and mildew and mold would be the result and a place where dust mites will thrive. One of the benefits of loose layered carpet is the warm atmosphere that it creates.

For the basement that suffers from excess damp, the best option is stained concrete with the choice of many patterns and colors it is virtually maintenance free. Another alternative is rubber flooring; this is also considered to be a favorable option and is moisture resistant and shock absorbent

Tiles can provide a wealth of options and one of the basement flooring alternatives favored by many as they are a durable floor covering and retard the spread of mold and mildew.
