First Step - Replace all the lights in your home with small fluorescent ones. These save energy which is great for your pocket book. They usually also last much longer than a standard bulb which helps in the long run as well. If you don't like the white fluorescent there are other versions out now, like pink or blue to give a warmer feel.
Second Step - Clean air is key with any home so make sure to check your air filters if you have air conditioning, you would be amazed. Also you can get air filters for your home in small sizes to put in every room to help clean the air and cut down on allergens. Also remember some vacuums have air filters that need to be cleaned and have allergen reducer abilities.
Third Step - If you happen to have an older home or have an apartment it is likely you have an ancient thermostat. The one you just dial up the arrow or push the little lever, well a great home improvement is to get a digital thermostat and most of the time this can be free! If you check with your electric company many of them will install the new digital and programmable thermostat for free. Being able to program when your air or heat comes on is so important and very good for someone on a budget.
Fourth Step - Water. This is one of the biggest wastes either with leaking faucets, toilets, or laundry. First make sure to go to every faucet in your home and check to see if there are leaks if there are fix them. Make sure when you turn off the water it truly turns off. With toilets you can change the flow so that it does not use as much water when flushed helping significantly with water waste. Don't turn it down so low that you have to flush twice but you also don't need the pressure so high that it splatters you either. The last thing with water is wash in cold water. This helps your pocket book more than you know.
Anyone can start improving how they save energy, water and just helping the overall health of the home. A lot of times they are things you can do without much grief or money. Sometimes all these eco home improvements take is a little thought.
