Cheap Entry-Level Guitars

Guitar Brands for Beginners and Where to Buy Them

Christopher Cacace
When learning any instrument, the most important thing you need to have is dedication. It doesn't matter how expensive or advanced the instrument is, if you aren't willing to practice and spend time with your instrument, you won't learn it. However if you've already accepted this and you're determined to learn, you're going to need a cheap guitar. I personally recommend getting the cheapest guitar possible to learn with. If you can identify why your guitar is cheap for whatever the reason, it means you're learning and ready to move on to something more expensive. Otherwise, the cheaper the better. I also recommend starting with a cheap acoustic guitar rather than electric. Determine if guitar is the instrument you want to learn through an acoustic so you don't have to purchase an amp along with a guitar. Acoustic guitars also generally run a bit cheaper (although they can become quite expensive)

Fortunately for those who are learning, the two main guitar manufactures Gibson and Fender have their own low-end models, named Epiphone and Squier respectively. These guitars produce quality sound for a fraction of the cost, with the benefit of being backed by major names. They also come in a variety of models and colors, if customization is your thing. Shop through Samash.com (a respectable music store) for some of the lowest prices around. Some examples:

Squier Bullet Stratocaster Tremolo, based on the classic Fender Stratocaster: $119.99

Epiphone Les Paul Special II: $169.99

Both brand names also have higher-end models if you're feeling confident or have a few extra bucks to spend. Remember though: when learning how to play, the cheaper the better. You don't need perfect sound when you're just learning chords and scales.

However, there's a brand which makes guitars based on the classic Fender and Gibson models at an even cheaper price than Squier or Epiphone, named Rondo. The quality of the sound produced and the craftsmanship put into each guitar is astounding compared to the prices they charge. Through their electric guitar section, you can find versions of the guitars listed above anywhere from $69.99 - $119.99, including a fine acoustic for 49.99. They also have an eBay store if you'd rather purchase through that.

These are just some brands to look at when looking around for a cheap electric. Amps are a necessity for playing with an electric, but only you know what size amp you need, whether it be for a small apartment or a full concert venue. Also be sure to check Craigslist before you buy, sometimes you find a real bargin (be wary before purchasing though, sometimes a deal IS too good to be true).

Hope you found this informative, and remember: practice makes perfect!
