Cheap Homemade Halloween Window Decorations

One of the most enjoyable parts of Halloween is the decorating and making your own window decorations can make it affordable too. Most of the items listed here you may already own. None of these window decorating ideas will take much time or money and you'll rewarded with happy (or frightened) faces on Halloween.

Halloween Lanterns

You'll need paper lunch bags, a utility knife, black paint, sand and tea light candles. Paint the side of the bag black. Then sketch your figure - a skeleton, bat, jack-o-lantern or a black cat - on the bag. Use the utility knife to cut out the figure, leaving enough detail intact so its shape can be easily recognized. Fill the bottom of the bag with some sand. Set a tea light candle in the sand and place the lantern in a window. Light carefully. You can make one for each window of your home.

Halloween Garland

Use construction paper in white for skeletons, gray for ghosts, orange for pumpkins and black for bats, spiders, cats or witch's hats. On each sheet of paper, draw or trace the desired shapes. You can use cookie cutters as a template if you like. Cut out the shapes and punch a small hole on each side of the shape. Run a length of transparent string through one side then the other of each shape. Alternate shapes and colors as you go. The longer your string and the more shapes you ad, the longer your garland will be. Simply tack or tape around windows. These can be custom made to fit each window.

Halloween Silhouettes

You'll need some old white or very light colored sheets, a marker and some black paint. Spread some newspaper on large flat surface and spread the sheet out on top of the newspaper. Draw a scary silhouette such as a body hanging from a rope or an arm holding a large butcher's knife directly on the sheet. Fill in the figure with black paint and allow it to dry completely. Once dried hang the sheet in a window and make sure a light shines on it from inside. From outside it will look like the scene you've created is actually taking place.
