New Year's in eastern Massachusetts can be a very rewarding time for many reasons. Heck, you made it another year. So, why not celebrate the coming of the new year by going out and volunteering at a local shelter. You'll be able to spread a bit of joy to people that have a hard time celebrating the coming of the new year or any day for that matter. No matter what city you are in, there's a shelter nearby keeping the homeless warm and needing assistance.
And, since we're in a giving mood, there's another group of people often overlooked this time of year. I know that they may have just been dusted off for Christmas but, your parents sure could use to spend more time with you. When was the last time you spent New Year's with your parents? This would make a great surprise for them and give you a chance to enjoy them a bit more. You never know, this could be your last chance. I sure wish I could spend another New Year's with my mother.
For another idea, you can always do what we did last year. We all went out to eat at Smokey Bones in Taunton and went to the movies at the Galleria Mall after. However, Showcase Cinemas all over the are play movies past midnight too and, to them, the New Year's event is another payday. We had an absolutely great time too. Even the baby almost made it 'til midnight. Smokey Bones was full but not flooded. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere perfect.
Now, for a twist, invite some friends over, you know, the people just like you that have no place to go and probably never get invited because of the kids or something. Set the grill out in the backyard and have wintertime bar-be-cue. Go online to look for a Price Rite close to you so you can get all of the grub on the cheap and just have a good time doing something different.
So, none of those things work for you, you say. Here's a thought. Remember that place you go to one or twice a year? It's on the corner not too far from you. No, I don't mean the liquor store. I'm talking about church. Many churches will have New Year's service. All you have to do is call to find out if the one you want to go to will be open and then get yourself there.
So, here go the final three. Check http://www.patriotcinemas.com for some super cheap movie tickets. They have locations in Hanover, Scituate, Hingham, South Weymouth, Rumford, Rhode Island, our haunt, and Portland, Maine. For a treat of an actual meal and a movie at the same time, check what's showing at http://www.chunkys.com. It really is a restaurant and a movie theater all in one. Locations are Haverhill, Pelham and Nashua, New Hampshire. Finally, consider just spending time in prayer to the God that has given you the time anyway. You won't be alone, and your evening won't be a stinker.

Post a CommentHaving grown up in Dorchester, I enjoyed your piece here. Went back for First Night some years back: It was wonderful. I continue to regard Boston as being a great place to visit and to be from! Though today, I am far better suited to life here in California - I don't think I remember how to navigate rotaries any more. Thanks for the memories. David
