Cheap Photography Props that Offer a Boutique Touch

Wicker Baskets are cheap and versatile as photography props. Whenever I see a cheap basket at a rummage or thrift store I grab it, especially if is large or unique. I use wicker baskets for babies, toddlers, pets, etc. I especially enjoy placing babies in large baskets with some tulle and flowers or bows.

Fantasy Cloth

From babies to glamour the fantasy cloth does it all. Drape the fantasy cloth over a plain backdrop for a glamorous but cheap photography prop/background. Expecting mothers look great wrapped in fantasy cloth and it is more comfortable than tulle. I have used fantasy cloth around the wicker baskets from above. All in all fantasy cloth makes a cheap photography prop or backdrop for almost any situation. Baby Bloomers

Traditional plain white baby bloomers are quite possibly my most used photography prop. I usually have 3 mo, 9 mo, and 2T on hand most babies or toddlers will fit into one of these sizes. All the bloomers I have bought I picked up at rummages or thrift stores for under $10. Since they are washable they last through many, many uses.

The bloomers make a cheap photography prop that can be worn alone or paired with an outfit the parents have brought. Throw on a headband or crochet hat (see below) and a few flowers or petals strewn about and you've got yourself the setting for an adorable portrait.

Headbands

Baby headbands can be found for under five dollars anywhere that clothes are sold. Use them as is or add a silk flower to the headband. Many moms really like when the baby has a flowered headband and then is holding or surrounded by a matching flower. Letting a toddler hold a flower is also a great way to keep them distracted enough to stay still for a few moments.

The headbands can also be found on Ebay in lots of different colors.

Crochet Hats

Crochet hats can be found at stores, on Ebay, or you can make one yourself. The large woven hats look great on kids of all ages and sizes. Just like the headbands just add a few flowers. These hats are great for headshots, especially when the hat is a bright color or a color that matches the subjects eyes.

Pillows

Large decorative pillows are cheap photography props that can be found at many stores or made from scratch. I use six different colors in my studio. The pillows I made are 24"x24". I have four primary colored pillows and then a pastel pink and blue. The pillows can be used in endless ways. Thrown about on a dark background they make a fun set that is not to distracting or use the pastel colors to lay newborns on for a gentle splash of color.
