First up are the really cheap costumes. A black t-shirt with the words "my cheap Halloween costume" written on it in white fabric ink (available at a local craft store) will get some looks. Any type of top with unsharpened pencils attached all over it, tell everyone you are "pointless". Of course the all time cheapest costume is a paper bag over your head with the eyes and mouth holes cut out of it.
Humor is always the easiest way to figure out a costume. Use an old saying and go from there. For example the saying "a penny for your thoughts" could conjure up all kinds of costumes from piggy banks to adult fare with "Penny" being the name of the character. Of course you have to let your imagination run wild with that type of humor.
Politics will be a huge part of the Halloween scene this year. One of the suggestions that came up was Obama as a pickpocket (a play on his "change" theme, with "change" meaning "pocket change") and McCain and Palin as pimp and hooker. As you can tell the friends I have are not supporters of either candidate.
Of course a trip to the local Dollar store might reap some interesting items like hats, striped socks and costume accessories. I picked up a wacky headband with purple spiders all over it and my daughter got accessories for her female Ninja outfit. For the smaller kids under 9 they had a wealth of plastic body amour for knights and Ninjas along with wings for fairies and angels. It sure does beat paying $19.00 and up at WalMart for a skimpy piece of fabric in a plastic package with a hanger.
Let you imagination run wild this Halloween and see what you come up with.
