Cheap Stocking Stuffers for Dad

ED Watts
Letting the kids help with stocking stuffers for Dad can be a lot of fun. Try one or more of these suggestions for inexpensive, yet thoughtful, stocking stuffers.

• Buy or recycle a small picture frame and insert a picture of Dad and the kids. This can range anywhere from nothing (if recycled) to around $5. Let the kids help pick out a picture for added fun.

• Have each one of your kids make their Dad a coupon book. Insert coupons for things like breakfast in bed, a shoe shine, or simply spending time together. The cost is nothing and only requires items you have around the house (paper, crayons/markers, staple for binding) and a little creativity. Dad will appreciate the thought and favors.

• Pick out a book for Dad on something that would interest him, such as history or a mystery novel. Most of the large bookstores have a clearance section filled with a ton of books on different topics. You can probably find something that Dad will like for $5.

• Pull out the video camera and let the kids record a message for Daddy. The younger ones can simply state what they love about their dad and the older kids can write a poem or perform a skit. You will need to put the video on a DVD or VHS tape, so expect to shell out no more than $5 if you don't already have these items. This is something Dad will get to keep for a long time.

• Check out Dad's tool box and see what he doesn't have or see what he might need to replace soon, such as a hammer of pair of pliers. Some tools will work great as a stocking stuffer because they are inexpensive and fit.

• Buy Dad a carrying case for his cell phone or iPod. Let the kids help pick one out. With the variety available, you should be able to find his favorite color or something with the logo of his favorite sports team. This is a good gift because not only are these inexpensive, they may help extend the lifetime of the phone/iPod (less scratches and dings from drops).

• If Dad is a golfer, then pick up a small package of golf balls. The smaller packs are only a few bucks each and will fit easily into the stocking.

• Go to the toy department and help the kids pick out a toy for Dad. No stocking is complete without a toy. Consider a classic toy, something he would have played with as a youngster, such as a yo-yo or slinky. These are cheap and will bring back a lot of memories.
