Summer time can be a stressful time for parents. With the children out of school, finding ways to keep them entertained can be costly and challenging. Here are some tips to make the summer months fun for everyone without breaking the bank book.
1) Go to the beach. Why go to a water park when you can go to a lake for free. Spending time at the beach, whether it is swimming or building sand castles is a fun way to enjoy the day. You can even make it a little challenging by having a contest or collecting seashells.
2) Movie. Forget spending all that money going to movies, instead rent a movie everyone can watch and spend a nice evening at home. You can give your children the feel of going to the movies by making pop corn with them and buying special snacks you would not normally buy.
3) Games. Board games are fun, and exciting to play with your kids. It is even more awarding when they finally beat you for the first time. Have a game night and if board games are not your specialty (or your child's) try making an attempt at one of their video games. If you are not a video game player than you can sit back and watch. Many children enjoy it when their parents get involved in things they enjoy, whether it is playing or watching as describe in Six Tips to Bring Families Closer Together.
4) Family meals. Instead of spending money going out to eat, make your meals. Better yet, have your children help you. Children love to get dirty and creative, whether it is baking or cooking a simple meal.
5) Spend a little, not a lot. Pick one special thing to spend money on during the summer and nothing else. Going to a park, playing miniature golf, or even going to a movie are all fun things to do. However, pick that one thing your child does not normally get to do and plan for that, like going to an amusement park.
6) Give them something to do during the summer. Summer can be boring, especially for a child. Find one activity they can do that will get them not only out of the house but give them something to do. Some good choices are swimming lessons, playing on a baseball team, or even a summer reading program. Options like these are cheap and will get them out of the house for a bit.
Doing things together as a family can be fun, especially in the summer time when children have more time to relax. However, it does not have to be costly to be fun. Whether it is eating at the dinner table together or watching a movie, it is something everyone will enjoy.

Thank you, Nana! Some of my families best time has been playing board games. As a child my fondest memories were sitting around the table with my mother and sister playing monoply.
Great job on this, Theresa, we have spent some of the best times playing board games with our grandchildren!!!
