Sheer drapes tend to be significantly less expensive than your heavier window treatments, and they allow a lot more light into the room, even when they are closed. You can purchase them at just about any home improvement store, and they are easy to install on your basic curtain rod.
You do need to be careful with sheer drapes because they are sheer, and therefore, not ideal options for window treatments in your bedroom. However, they will work great for most families in the main living areas of the house: kitchen, living room, den, sitting room, entry, dining room, and wherever else you have windows.
Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Make Your Own Drapes
If you have a sowing machine and basic proficiency, it is really easy to make your own inexpensive window treatments. All you need to purchase is the fabric, and you just need to hem the edges and sew loops onto the top (or slits through the top, if you prefer that method). Your crafty tendencies will save you a lot of money, and this is especially useful for odd sizes of windows that will not fit well with your typical store-bought window treatments.
Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Use Old Fabrics
Even cheaper than just making your own drapes with fabric you purchased is using old fabric you already have in your home. If you have some sheets for a size of bed that you no longer have, convert them into drapes for a room. Similarly, if you find yourself with tablecloths that would look better on windows, or throw blankets that aren't exactly what you are looking for, consider whether you can turn them into window treatments.
Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Shop Budget Stores
Although it is tempting to buy your window treatments at the most upscale places you can find, often places like Target will have much cheaper options that are just about the same quality. The variety of selection might not be as wide, but you can at least look and see if you like anything they have in stock.
Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Be Flexible
The most important thing to consider when looking for cheap window treatments is that you should be flexible. Your rooms don't all have to match completely, and a funky look will give it character. As long as you like it, that's all that really matters.
