Cheaper Alternatives to Doll House Flooring

A big issue I ran into while looking for decor for my doll house was flooring. Doll house tiles, carpet, etc is just like any other doll house crafting material: expensive. I've done a lot of online window shopping and every place was astronomically high. I'm looking to decorate a doll house, not go into debt doing it!
So, I brainstormed alternates that are easier to obtain and a lot cheaper. I came up with a few options dependent on the texture and type of flooring you might be after.

Scrapbook Paper:
Scrapbook paper is great and very interesting to use. You can mimic many textures in the patterns. Marble, wood floors, brick, what have you. Just keep the size ratios in mind. Some patterns are a bit on the large size. The image attached to this article is a paper I'm using for my doll house's bathroom flooring.

Short Pile Velvet:
Plusher and shorter variety velvets make great carpeting options. They are soft and they look great! For a plusher look to your carpet, add a thin layer of padding under the velvet. Roll your raw edges under and glue in place. I will use this as my Master Bedroom flooring option.

Linoleum:
Linoleum is a great option for those kitchen and bathrooms. Some home improvement places (like Menards) sell flooring samples of linoleum patterns for around $1 for a 6 X 9 inch square. Most houses probably would not need more than two of these samples. Many of these come in small or very vague patterns that would be perfect for a doll house scale.

Wood Planks and Parquet style:
Some shops also sell wooden plank flooring samples. You might even find some parquet flooring samples. These are a bit more costly to buy than the Linoleum, but look real nice. Just be careful about the size ratios. A lot of the wooden flooring is much too large for a doll house scale. If you aren't worried on matching or trying to match you scales, than this is a great option!

Tiles:
Some craft shops sell tiles for grout style crafts. These could work great as bathroom or kitchen walling materials. Just glue them up and make your patterns! If you really want to mimic the authentic look, slip some grout between your tiles.

Any of these options are suitable for the serious hobbyist or for a child's doll house. Best of all they will cost a fraction of what the craft and hobby stores will charge for doll house flooring.
