Take vitamins for example, you can buy Centrum which are supposed to be the best multi-vitamin, but look at the label on them and compare them to a cheaper store brand they are alike. I buy my multi-vitamins at Aldi's. The price is great and they are identical to Centrum, so to everyone who thinks the name on the product makes a big difference. Wrong.
Ketchup is another one. I have tried a lot of different brands. Hunts is definitely thicker, but that's the only difference. They all taste alike.
One thing I have found about one cheaper item; Aldi's brand of shortening is much better than Crisco. Yeah, do you believe that?
You can make no fail piecrust with it, where if you use Crisco, and over work your dough it will be tough. It is the same with other brands of shortenings. Aldi's brand is tops over them all. It even tastes better, and no heartburn afterwards. (This is my opinion of course).
Those are just samples of buying more expensive name brands, over the cheaper store brands.
Having had a family of 6 hearty eaters, I had no choice but to shop in a cheaper way. One thing I did find was that foods don't care what your status is, or whether you spend more on it. Since it all pretty much tastes the same, I guess the only ones who benefit from it, is the Company who makes the (name) brand items. Boy, aren't they reaping in the glory.
There are many status symbols, but why let the price of food be one?
Today, people are so money conscious, they should pay attention to how they shop for food. There are so many other things that eat our money up, why let it be something we eat, that is doing it? No pun intended.
We live in an over competitive world, and it all comes down to name brands. Whether it's food, autos, computers, or whatever; the fight is on for the sales and the money. Who cares if it's a good product or not, just get that (name) behind it. Ahhh a world of moneygrubbers. I wonder where it all began?
Toys, now here's a scary subject. The Christmas season is coming up, and I shudder to think of all these top name toys that will be reaping in the loot. To tell you the truth it reminds me of a bunch of con artists out there to screw everyone. They suck our children in with commercials; that's the start of the con job, or is it really brainwashing? Either way the kids will be most definite on what they want Santa to bring them. Have you ever lived with a kid who didn't get what he wanted? It isn't very pleasant.
I think we all should close our eyes to the (name) brands and support the little no name brands, and put some big companies in their place. If they cared about people as much as they care about reaping in the benefits of their products, they would see that not everyone could afford what they sell. Some will scrimp to pay that extra amount for their products, but where does that leave the buyer? They, (the companies) don't care. I care; I care because I have been sucked into their gimmicks. Now, that I haven't got a pot to water in, so to say, I wish I could turn back the hands of time and do things a lot different.
I wouldn't buy anything that had a name on it that ever made it to the TV, radio or the computer media. I would probably be much richer than I am today, instead of just a little wiser.
I am now at an age where medication comes in, much needed medication. We all know that the most expensive thing in our world today, is anything having to do with Medicine.
We all get to the age where we need it in some form or another, but what the heck do we do if we have no insurance, or can't get Medicaid, for having too much money, (but not enough to buy insurance), and too young for Medicare? Of course there are Generics, let's just say Generics are cheaper than name brands; they still are costly, if you have to take a lot of different medications.
For anyone who is struggling at making a living, I would suggest to save for your future, for if the day comes that they get rid of social security, everyone will be hurting. We live on one social security income, it really isn't a benefit, once all the medications are gotten and the bills are paid, there isn't much left.
No one ever is really certain that their future holds a permanent income with benefits. Companies close down or move, every day leaving workers hi and dry with nothing. Please save now while you have it, if you have it; and by all means shop cheap.

Post a CommentAldis is great, here they are raising their prices on some things but they still are basically still reasonable and I love their stuff...it is so much better than other name brand products.
the GFC hadn't really started when you wrote this, a reprise would be interesting.
in australia we have two major supermarkets who price-fix and strangle competition.
aldi came recently, and is putting pressure on them.. i'm very thankful for their being here.
some of their cheap stuff is superior to the expensive stuff at the competitors.
I think everyone ca relate to your comments. It will get worse before it gets better.
