We Rhode Islanders might live in the Ocean State, but that doesn't mean we can't produce a mean Christmas tree, as the dozens of Christmas tree farms in Rhode Island demonstrates. For those of us living in the state capital, even the ocean can seem like a long distance trip, so it's no wonder that many city dwellers never realize the abundance of great nature opportunities outside the city limits. Below are just three of the many Christmas tree farms in Rhode Island, each of which is well worth a visit. Lord knows you don't "need" three Christmas trees, but wouldn't it be great for the excuse to get out in the woods more than once this December? Here is a guide to the cheapest Christmas tree farms in and near Providence, Rhode Island:

Big John Leyden's Christmas Tree Farm

In addition to offering choose and cut Christmas trees, living trees to plant after Christmas, Precut trees, and tree wrapping, Big John can mail a 6-foot Fraser home to you, anywhere in the world, for $60 plus the cost of shipping. Directions: Rte 95 to Exit 5B (that's102N); 102N for 3 miles; left onto Plain Meeting House Road; approximately 1 mile up on the right. Look for the big red barn.

Open only on weekends between now and Thanksgiving.

Tagging starts November 22. After the holiday, Big John's will be open 7 days a week from 9 AM - 4 PM.

Shire Tree Farm

Like Big John's Shire Tree Farm in Hope, Rhode Island offers both Cut Your Own and Pre-Cut Christmas tree. Shire Tree Farm also sells florist quality wreaths ranging from 20 to 48 inches, as well as swag and center pieces all freshly made right at the farm. There's not a lot of information about them online, but believe me, this is a place you have to visit to appreciate.

Directions: Conveniently located off of RT-116 at Scituate-Coventry town line

Starting the day after Thanksgiving, Shire Tree Farm will be open weekdays from 4 PM - 8 PM and on weekends from 10 AM - 8 PM.

Borrelli's Christmas Tree Farm

A family farm that specializes in Christmas trees, B Farm allows you to tag your tree in the fall and pick it up, freshly cut and shaken, when you are ready for it. Now offering beautiful wreaths and fresh-cut trees. The farm promises to plant a new tree for everyone harvested. Also offers great opportunities for wildlife spotting.

DIRECTIONS

Route 295 to Route 6 West exit. At end of exit ramp, go right on Route 6 West. Proceed about 1 1/3 miles, then right at light onto Brown Avenue. Proceed 1 mile to 97 Brown Avenue and pull in!

Open weekends through November, daily started December 1st, 9 AM - 4 PM.
