Check Food Dates Before You Buy

Read the Dates of Everything You Buy in a Supermarket Including Cereals and Canned Goods

Sondra C

Food prices have sky rocketed while salaries have gone down. When I do my food shopping there are things I have learned to check out before I buy. Otherwise the fresh food I thought I had just bought will get sour or spoil in a day before I have a chance to eat it.

Many years ago, I learned to check the dates of everything I buy. If I cannot read the date of freshness on a bag of lettuce, I will not buy it. if lettuce is more than a few days old it will get rotten sitting in the refrigerator. Search for the latest dated bag in the back.

Milk is the worse offender in the grocery store. They stack the latest dates in the back of the refrigerator and the older dates are in the front of the display where it is easier for a customer to grab. If you have to ask for help then do so. Never buy milk products unless it has the latest date.

Get the idea? Every product in the grocery store is dated. It might take a little longer to do your food shopping, but it is well worth the wait to buy fresh food by checking the dates.

I regularly save 20-25% off the retail price of our groceries. However, I've noticed in the last six months that even with a list and mapped-out menus, I end up crossing a few things off the list once I get to the supermarket.

Thanks for good advice, Sondra! I confess I go for the not so fresh ones sometimes when I'm cooking them right after and they're red-tagged at like half-price. I do go for latest dated stuff if I won't be using them right away, tho. :)

funny story, I never knew eggs had dates on them until my friend (who died from cancer) came to my house and told me I should throw out the eggs which were expired for six months
