Check Them Tires

Randy Jones
As everyone knows your automobile is probably the second largest investment you have besides your home, or possibly kids in college. One thing I see every day almost is the costly repair or replacement of automotive tires. Many people buy them pay good money for them have them professionally put on the vehicle and some get them aligned others say what the hay don't need it. A few months go by and a few thousand miles and you pull into the tire installers garage and say something like this "I get a real bad shaking at 55 mph and I think a tire is out of balance." So the guy says to you lets take a look! After close examination the maintenance guy shows you these flat spots on the back of your tire and explains this is chopping of the tire. They go further to explain to you that this is caused from lack of tire rotation. You then abruptly jump in and remind them that you just purchased those tires 8 months ago and they only have 12000 miles on them, so it must be a defect in the tire.

Unfortunately this is a very common scenario at many tire stores. When you purchase a set of tires you must keep in mind what exactly you will be using the tires for. If you are constantly on the highway and making long distant trips chances are even though the price sounds good a 40000 compared to a 80000 mile tire is not going to hold up long. If you are generally an around town driver with an occasional vacation trip or two a year than you would benefit from a 40000 mile or even 50 to 60 thousand mile tire if the tire is designed to the driving you are expecting to under go.

Here is where the reality sets in. Words like chopping, cupping, and feathering are all the terms related to premature wear on tires. This wear can in some rare cases be the fault of the tire but much to often it is the cause of lack of proper maintenance to the tires. Almost every tire center across the United States offers free lifetime rotation and balance and many even free alignment checks. These are offered to make sure you receive the projected life from the set of tires you have purchased. These procedures normally take about 45 minutes maybe an hour but can save you around $500 dollars or more on the price of a new set. The easiest rule of thumb is that if you change your oil every 3000 miles than you should have your tires inspected and rotated if needed every second oil change and while your at it if time per mitts you do the same on your alignment check. This will make assurance that your tires are well aligned and wearing evenly.

A set of tires on your vehicle are like anything else, if you let them go they will wear out prematurely if not properly maintained and with just about every tire center offering free maintenance to help you with maintaining the life span of them make sure you take full advantage of it.
