Checklist of Things to Do Before Leaving for the Airport

A Concise and Comprehensive List

LM
The time leading up to vacation or business travel can be hectic. In addition to suspending mail and newspaper delivery, what else needs to be done? Use this checklist of things to do before leaving the house for the airport.

Make a list of things to do.

There is a lot to do and remember before you leave. Begin a list in the days leading up to departure, adding things as they come to mind. Place the list in a prominent location the day before departure so you can refer to it in the hurried moments before you leave for the airport.

Confirm your flight and lodging reservations.

Check the airline's website or call to confirm your flight and check for delays. Confirm your lodging reservations.

Carry your lodging address and directions with you to ease airport-to-lodging transportation.

Carry confirmation numbers with you to avoid check-in confusion.

Travel Documents

Double check to be certain your valid photo ID and signed passport (if necessary) are in your wallet or purse.

Make photo copies of your ID, passport data page and credit card (front & back). Give one set to someone you trust (who's not traveling with you). Carry one set with you, separate from your wallet or purse, everywhere you go. They'll come in handy if the originals are stolen or misplaced.

Insurance cards are necessary when traveling. Ask your insurance company if your policy is valid at your destination. If not, consider supplemental travel insurance.

Check your purse or carry-on for prohibited items.

In an effort to speed-up the airport security process, purge your purse or carry-on of prohibited items. The TSA website provides a list of such items.

The TSA supports the 3-1-1 guideline for carry-ons. To get through the security checkpoint quicker, all liquids must be three ounces or less; all contained in one quart-sized, clear, plastic zip-top bag; one bag per passenger.

Itinerary

Provide a friend or family member with a copy of your itinerary in case of emergency.

Adjust your home's thermostat.

An adjustment to the thermostat will save money on heating or cooling costs.

Toilets

Yes, toilets. Be sure the are all flushed.

All lids need to be up. Otherwise, you'll be greeted by moldy chemistry projects in the toilet bowls.

Kitchen

Empty the refrigerator and kitchen trash can prior to leaving for the airport to eliminate spoilage and odors.

If you've brewed coffee, double check the power switch to make sure it's off. Empty the carafe and dispose of the coffee grounds.

Unplug all electronics.

Exterior Doors & Windows

Check all exterior doors and windows to be sure they're locked and secure.

Glance behind you as you leave to be certain the garage door closes completely.

VIP Names & Numbers List

Though you may have this info stored electronically, it's smart to print a list of very important names and phone numbers to carry with you everywhere you go.

Include emergency contact info, bank and credit card phone numbers and your travel agent's numbers.

Other info to consider: instructions on how to unfreeze an iPod, email addresses, serial numbers for cameras, lenses and other electronics.

Medical Supplies and Power Cords

No matter their nature, medical supplies are a must-have.

Label each power cord prior to packing it. They all tend to look the same.

Definitely flush the toilets. You've got a lot of good points that most people don't think about, especially that printing out a paper list of information.
