Checkmate

Lisa R. Strong
A game my mother taught me;
So many years ago;
I wish that I could master;
Tonight I seek vengeance;
Upon my unseen opponent;
As I move my knight;
Closer to his queen;
I cannot watch his eyes;
Nor his expressions;
My sights are glued to the board;
Trying to contemplate his next move;
While at the same time I plan mine;
How should I move?
His king is in the back row;
Smirking across the checkerboard;
My knight captures his bishop;
He backs down from his offensive;
His pawns are few;
I got him this time!
I can feel my heart beating;
I revel in my cleverness;
His kingdom will fall for sure;
Suddenly, I am caught off guard;
His rook and queen have cornered me;
My king is doomed;
Foiled again by my faceless foe;
I try to regain my composure;
But the game is over;
The computer wins again.
