If you do not know what absinthe is, absinthe is a high proof, dark green-colored and mysterious liquor that was famous in the 19th century among artists and writers. Absinthe itself is distilled with the herb grande wormwood with an active ingredient thujone which is supposed to have hallucinogenic properties. More than a century ago, absinthe was prohibited because of distilling problems and undeveloped distilling techniques. Aside from this, absinthe also had a mysterious reputation and other several false impressions which forced and maintained the ban all those years.
Many writers and artists loved to drink absinthe. Some of them include Vincent Van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway. According to some, absinthe's banning may have derived from exaggerated stories of the drink's hallucinogenic properties. Examples of these stories include Van Gogh carrying an empty bottle of absinthe when he sliced off his ear just to get attention from an estranged lover, and Hemingway noting many times how absinthe seemed to enhance his creativity and passion for writing.
Absinthe is usually produced in Europe. In fact, the best and the most original absinthe can be found in Czech Republic. Even though absinthe is high in alcoholic content, a lot of new absinthe drinkers claim to have a clear headed mind after drinking absinthe. This may be because of absinthe's unique main ingredients. Absinthe's active ingredient thujone, actually a natural ingredient which may be found in several plants and flowers, is believed to create a pleasant and creative effect on the drinker. Perhaps this is why many artists and writers preferred this drink during the 19th century.
Today, there are many types of absinthe available in the market. However, a good number of new absinthe drinkers are more familiar with the drink through the original absinthe, aka King of Spirits. If you want to enjoy a traditional absinthe, you will need a small cocktail glass, a slotted spoon, a sugar cube and some ice water. First, you need to pour absinthe into your glass. Put the sugar cube in the spoon, placing the spoon just over the open glass. Bit by bit, pour 5 ounces or so of ice water over the sugar cube into the glass. Watch as the sugar dissolves into the absinthe.
To identify if you are using original absinthe, the color will change into a dark, cloudy green. Hold the glass up to your nose and you can scent the rich aroma of anise and licorice. As to this point, you can now enjoy the legendary original absinthe - purely European and historic!
