Before you buy the gift to put under the glass, you need to get the actual cheese dome. Then you can find a cute gift to put inside. If you buy the gift first, you will be forced to find a dome that fits over the gift. So, it's easier to get the cheese dome first then finding a gift to fit.
You can either buy a cheese dome or you can make one. You can buy inexpensive cheese domes at any store that sells kitchen items, including some dollar stores. They come in many sizes with different types of bases. Some have a flat base and some sit on a pedestal. Some are made from clear glass and some are made from colored glass. Some have short domes and some have tall domes. You can see some images of what a cheese dome looks like if you click here.
If you prefer, you can also make your own cheese dome. All you have to do is find any bowl or vase to use as the dome. Then you will need a plate to hold the bowl or vase. It's best to use a plate that has a bit of a lip or ledge so the dome will not slide off too easily. If you want to also create a pedestal, you can hot clue a votive candle holder to the center of the bottom of the plate. Making your own cheese dome allows you to use whatever fancy plates you want. A fun cheese dome to make for kids is to flip a soup bowl upside down onto a matching plate and tucking the gift under the bowl. Then the cheese dome can later be used to hold soup and a sandwich!
Now that you have your cheese dome, you need a little gift to put under the dome. You can put anything that fits. A restaurant gift card is a very good option. You can also serve up a small box of jewelry. For children, you can tuck a little toy under the dome. No matter what you use as the gift, it will look special if given in a cheese dome!
If you want to keep the dome from sliding off the base while transporting the gift, you can tape the dome down using tape. Use a tape that is easy to remove, such as electrical tape. You can also tie ribbon around the base and dome to keep it from sliding.
