Chelsea Clinton's wedding to Marc Mezvinsky is estimated to cost over $3 million.

According to New York Daily News, the bulk of the wedding expenses will go to $600,000 air-conditioned glass-walled tents and $500,000 on high-end flowers.

Miscellaneous expenses for Clinton's wedding include $15,000 on toilets: "The Clintons would opt, fittingly, for the Presidential Series Luxury Washrooms, which are equipped with vanities for the ladies, sinks with hot water, marble interior, air conditioning, skylights and flushing toilets, plus plenty of paper products and soap."

Chelsea Clinton's Wedding: Why So Expensive?

Why is Clinton's wedding so expensive? Another New York Daily News article observes that there is additional pressure for celebrities to go all-out in their extravagance. Because the whole world is watching, celebrity weddings are influential in setting trends:

"That fact is multiplied many times over when it's a celebrity wedding, where the bride's dress must be designer, the flowers must be exotic and the table service A-plus to pamper the privileged palates."

And, as high-profile figures, security is always a concern, particularly for the Clintons, who would otherwise have to worry about detractors and wedding crashers. Security for Clinton's wedding will run around $200,000.

Chelsea Clinton's Wedding: Other High-Profile Weddings

Forbes Magazine complied a list of the 20 most expensive celebrity weddings. Near the top of the list included model Elizabeth Hurley and husband Arun Nayar, whose wedding cost around $2.5 million. Their extravagant double-ceremony included a wedding in Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, followed by a Hindu wedding at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodpur, India.

Next on the list of expensive celebrity weddings was Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, whose wedding cost around $3 million. The couple is now divorced. Finally, Liza Minelli and David Gest spent around $3.5 million on their wedding in March 2002, but divorced the following year.

We often hear of how weddings are supposed to be the happiest days of our lives. And, judging from how celebrity marriages unfold, it was all downhill from there.

As for the costs of Chelsea Clinton's wedding, tents -- $600,000; flowers -- $500,000; a happy celebrity marriage that lasts for more than five years -- priceless.

this is disgusting think of all the people who could be fed and housed with this kind of money and with our unemployment and economy this is what our government lady spends it on. Shame on the Clintons.

I simply don't understand how -- or WHY -- a wedding should cost this much.

If her folks can afford it, then I guess that's a good way to stimulate the economy! You do have a point... anything less than extravagant would be picked to death by the media.
