Chelsea Handler Hosts VMAs as She Brushes Off Sex Tape and Deals with Lindsay Lohan and Kanye West

Chelsea Handler explained her participation in a sex tape earlier this year; now she hosts MTV's VMAs. Lindsay Lohan, a often used punchline for Handler will also appear on the show after serving a brief jail sentence for screwing up her probation.

Also, Handler has said she is prepared for Kanye West; himself just a year after dissing Taylor Swift on the VMAs.

While technically speaking people tune in for the music videos themselves, the personal soap operas and acts of contrition will highlight the 2010 VMAs.

Chelsea Handler, a sexy and cutting edge comedienne, hosts a talk show, Chelsea Lately, on the E! Entertainment Channel.

The show is hardly for the faint of heart, as Handler's brand of cutting humor and sarcastic wit respects few boundaries. That said, there is a modest sensibility to it as the humor never crosses major lines and stays comfortably this side of an "R" rating.

At the beginning of the summer, a sex tape featuring Handler with an unidentified man performing a sex act was leaked.

Chandler's camp said the seemingly amateur porn was meant as a 'joke' and was produced many years ago. While it may have been a joke, it was a sex tape nonetheless.

At the time, Handler was quoted as saying, "I would like to say to RadarOnline.com, thanks for ruining my surprise Christmas gift to my staff, and number two, it was made as a joke. I put it on an audition tape for a comedy club, because I'm a comedienne, and I've been showing it at birthday parties for (expletive) years!"

Handler need not have worried. Her image, reputation and career have received relatively little impact. The summer of 2010, after all, has in many quarters been deemed to be the 'summer of the sex tape' as stars of both big and small impact have seemed to pop up everywhere in homemade and/or professional sex tapes.

For Lindsay Lohan, however, the summer was far more troubling. While the sex tape story seemed to embarrass Handler on a relatively minor scale, Lohan went to prison this summer for probation violations related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Lohan is now out of jail and rehab stint and is appearing on the VMAs to, in part, address her situation.

It seems that Lohan would like to demonstrate to the public that she is on her feet and recovering.

One of the major points of intrigue tonight on the VMAs will be watching how Chandler treats Lohan as she often uses her for fodder on her show.

For his part, Kanye West has not appeared in a porn, nor been to prison. He did, however, make himself into a national joke last year during the VMAs when he disrespected Taylor Swift by hijacking her acceptance speech for video of the year. He apparently felt that Beyonce should have won.

West was rebuked by none other than President Obama, who called West a 'jackass' for conducting himself the way in which he did. Handler is said to have 'water guns' and 'BB guns' on hand tonight in case West decides to try a repeat performance.

It is true that the VMAs have struggled with relevance in recent years; but the combination of the sex tape star Chelsea Handler hosting, the recently released Lindsay Lohan appearing, and the disgraced Kanye West repenting will combine to make this a magical evening at the most prestigious of all MTV awards shows.
