It appears as though the majority of the people who are burning themselves with these chemicals are teenagers. Many of them send emails to my company and ask for advice to relieve their pain. They are also interested in alternative controls for acne without these harsh chemicals. I have spent many hours searching for advice from medical professionals for treatment of chemical burns caused by acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and glycolic acid. Sadly, I have not found any medical solutions for burns caused by these specific chemicals.
It is not difficult to burn yourself with these chemicals. If skin care products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid are not rinsed off completely in a minute or two, the 'tingling' becomes burning and pain associated with a chemical burn. Parents are obviously unaware of the risks. Products that contain these chemicals are marketed in teen magazines, in television commercials during popular teen programs and all over the internet on popular teen sites. If I were a 'normal' mother, I would not believe that these chemicals are harmful when the advertisements are directed at teenagers without any warnings of the consequences when not used exactly as stated on the label.
If you have a chemical burn caused by benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid, my recommendation is that you seek professional medical attention. Take the following recipe with you for approval by a medical professional. Some people may feel that the redness and skin swelling is simply sensitive skin. However, it is a chemical burn - similar to sunburn. If you choose not to seek medical attention, here is a solution that will reduce inflammation of the skin to help relieve pain and speed healing. Please do not apply conventional lotions, creams or Vaseline to the areas with chemical burns. The alcohols and other ingredients in these lotions and petroleum-based oils can further irritate the skin and make the problem worse.
Burn/Dryness Relief
1/2 cup powdered oats (powder in a blender or use oat flour)
2 tbsp honey
1 squished gel-cap of vitamin E
Add enough aloe juice to make a paste.
Apply mixture to skin and leave on for 10 minutes or more.
Rinse.
Gently rub a liquid vegetable oil, preferably coconut oil, on all affected skin.
Use this blend as often as needed to help relieve your suffering. If you are interested in acne controls that have no risks of a chemical burn, or are simply interested in considering alternatives to your current acne routine, feel free to stop by the Sunflower Naturals web site for more information regarding acne control options.

I don't get severe acne but break out a few times a month, especially on my back. I decided to try this topical antibiotic gel and then started using a salicylic acid wash and astringent. Needless to say my face and neck got burned, raised red skin, burning and itching. Not only that but now I am breaking out in these tiny little pimples everywhere! Hundreds of them. I look like I have some kind of disease. What can I do? help?
Go to the hospital - you need medical attention. Don't know how you did that but go to a hospital and get them to make sure it doesn't continue burning - it's an acid and they need to deactivate it.
Anyone have any clues as how to deal with a salicylic acid burn in the throat?
I had a horrible chemical burn form using proactive. It had been a week and a half with no relief. My skin was thick red itchy and had a stingy sensation. When I found this all natural recipe I went right home and mixed it up. I had to use it twice. The day after my face peeled which was inevitable, and now it feels so soft. I am very grateful and will always have these ingredients on hand. Thanks
