Chestertown Maryland's Holiday House Tour 2010

Celebrating the Holidays

Jackie Hardin
Chestertown , Maryland is known for its historic homes, hospitality and generosity and all three will be displayed on December 11, 2010 as the town opens its doors for the 26th Annual Holiday House Tour.

Twelve homes decked out in traditional holiday decorations will give visitors a sense of what Christmas was like in 16th and 17th century on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Boxwood and pine will decorate the doors and windows will be lit by candlelight. Century old fireplaces will provide warmth to visitors entering the homes. Docents will greet guest at each historic site sharing the homes history and architectural highlights.

This year's tour will include;

The Custom House served as the port of entry for goods entering Maryland from around the world in the 18th century. Not far from where the building stands the residents of Chestertown held their own Tea Party protesting the tax on tea like their fellow protestors in Boston . The Custom House 18th was constructed in 1740 and is a wonderful example of Flemish bond brick work.

The Hynson Ringgold House is a beautifully maintained home built in 1743 and the current home of the President of Washington College. This is an example of 18th century life at its finest.

Included in the tour are several other private homes including; The Stolp Residence,

Fort Belvedere , the Loller Residence, the Levi Rodgers House, the Adams Residence,

The Hugler Residence, the Cameron Residence, the Bud Chambers Residence and the River House. The Geddes Piper House, home of the Kent County Historical Society, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church are also on the tour.

The Holiday House Tour takes place from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at www.holidayhousetour.org or at Emmanuel Episcopal Church 101 North Cross Street on the day of the tour. Tickets are $12.50 in advance or $15.00 the day of the tour. Light refreshment will be served.

Chestertown is filled with quaint shops and fine restaurants and the perfect day or weekend destination from Philadelphia or Washington . What better way to celebrate the season than a visit to Chestertown and a Holiday House Tour?
