Chevy Winning Our Hearts Again

Has an American Legend Broken a New Frontier?

Randy Jones
GM has possibly broken the American auto industry into a new frontier as a world leader in up scaling the idea of Hybrid Automobiles. As GM's Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson has announced the birth of the Chevy Volt.
According to stats that GM has outlined for this new hybrid it seems that if everything goes according to plan with some testing by the EPA GM could role this beauty out to the showrooms as early as late 2010.

According to the Chief Executive Officer General Motors has the ultimate faith that the Volt will largely surpass it's now competition the Toyota Prius which currently sets the standard on Hybrid Technology and currently hitting 48 miles per gallon. GM CEO Fritz has stated that the Volt is looking to possibly hit the triple digits on the miles per gallon ratio.

How will this be possible one would ask? The Volt has a great set up. For starters you have an electric motor, this is followed by an ION Battery Pack which GM says can be recharged at any home outlet. If this was not enough, these two technologies are followed by a small Internal Combustion Engine which will generate electricity for an estimated range of 300 miles.

In theory GM would speculate that if the Volt is driven less than 40 miles you could go without the use of gasoline. While currently GM is still tweaking some ideas on battery life and the process of switching between battery and engine power the Volt has all the makings to be the new leader in Hybrid Innovation.

With this technology one would think that it would be impossible to own such a break through in auto advancement but don't get discouraged. Currently GM is not setting a price to the consumer but estimates show we may be looking at a possible price starting around $40.000. Now before everyone goes of the financial rocker this is a first generation auto and as we all have experienced generally as the models reproduce they become more affordable. Lets as well keep in mind that this would be pricing before any Government Tax Rebates which could be in the area of $7,500.

I'm going to honest, I did not think I would see the day that Hybrid Automobiles would interest me especially coming from a generation of muscle cars which drank as much gas as they did oil. As I have become older though there is one fact that haunts me every day. We are one of if not the largest dependent of foreign oil in the world. This basically leaves the American public at the mercy of foreign pricing as well as manufacturing cost.
I believe that if the Chevy Volt can lead a revolution with the American Auto Industry and set a pace that other American car and truck manufacturer's will follow or surpass even, than this is good news not only for the main stream conformist of wanting to help save the planet but this could as well give the way over due needed boost to the ever growing unemployment rate which is eating up the foundation of America.

GM has always played a role in the American Auto Heritage with such cars as the Camaro and the and the ever loved Corvette which have been admired buy everyone from teens to collectors for over 40 years. So with the manufacturing of a great Hybrid Technology as the Volt I see GM playing a role in the generations to come as an admirer of not only car enthusiasts but those who have a love for technology will probably be inspired as well.
I can only say hats off to GM for possibly opening up a new future for what was know as the Great American Auto Industry. If you have not looked at the Chevy Volt I highly recommend going to GM's web site and check this little beauty out. You may be suprised because the technology is state of the art but the look is as only Chevrolet could give.
